John Carlo, also known by his ring name Johnny Bombs, is a professional heavyweight boxer 16 professional bout highly decorated martial arts instructor, a dedicated coach, and a SAG-AFTRA actor born in The Bronx, New York.

Professional boxing

Competing in the heavyweight division out of Dover Plains, New York, Carlo put together 14-2 professional boxing career:

  • The Leon Spinks Victory: The historic highlight of his professional career took place on October 22, 1994, in Washington, D.C. Carlo faced the former undisputed world heavyweight champion Leon Spinks, defeating him via an explosive first-round knockout just 1 minute and 9 seconds into the bout.[1] [2] Washington Post NewsPaper Clipping
  • State Title Challenger: On December 5, 1997, Carlo fought Richie "The Bull" Melito at the Westbury Music Fair for the vacant USA New York State Heavyweight Title, losing second round ko.[citation needed][3]
  • The Arkansas Slugfest: In his final professional bout on November 18, 2005, Carlo traveled to Fort Smith, Arkansas, to face the undefeated Arkansas State Heavyweight Champion, JD Chapman. The first round was an absolute, back-and-forth slugfest where Carlo successfully staggered Chapman before Chapman rallied to secure a second-round stoppage.[4]

Martial arts and coaching

John Carlo has dedicated nearly four decades to martial arts instruction, community mentorship, and building fighters across New York State: [6]

  • 1987–Present: Founded the John Carlo Boxing Club, operating prominent training and combat sports facilities across Putnam County and Dutchess County. [7]

He first made his mark in regional combat sports by winning the Western Massachusetts Golden Gloves Championship in 1989.[8]

Ultimate Fighting Championship

In 1997, as a highly-skilled all-around fighter with backgrounds in kickboxing, judo, and professional boxing, Carlo was officially accepted and invited to serve as an alternate fighter for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). His invitation came during the legendary early tournament era of the promotion. [9]

Following his competitive athletic years, Carlo transitioned his real-world combat knowledge into the entertainment industry as a SAG-AFTRA actor and stunt performer, frequently bringing immense authenticity to roles as trainers, enforcers, and mob figures.
