James Cubitt Interiors (JCI) is an interior architecture and design consultancy based in Lagos, Nigeria. The practice was established in 2009 as part of the James Cubitt group and initially focused on providing interior design consultancy in West Africa.[1]
History
[edit]James Cubitt Interiors was established in 2009 to operate alongside the architectural activities of the James Cubitt group. According to a 2019 profile published by BUILD, the practice was established in response to demand for interior design consultancy in West Africa.[1]
The practice was established both to provide interior design services for projects undertaken by the wider James Cubitt group and to undertake independent interior design commissions. Its work subsequently encompassed commercial, residential, hospitality and retail interiors.[1]
Practice and design approach
[edit]James Cubitt Interiors undertakes interior architecture and design projects, particularly in workplace and commercial environments.
The practice has publicly associated its work with the relationship between interior environments and the wellbeing of their occupants. During a 2025 presentation of the Africa Trade Centre project, representatives of James Cubitt Interiors discussed workplace efficiency, employee wellbeing, material selection and the integration of mechanical and electrical systems within interior design.[2]
The company describes its purpose as "improving wellbeing through interior design".[3]
Africa Trade Centre
[edit]James Cubitt Interiors worked with James Cubitt Architects on the Africa Trade Centre project. In 2025, the two practices presented the project at an industry forum focused on sustainability in architecture and interior design.[2]
Coverage of the project in The Guardian highlighted sustainability, workplace performance, employee wellbeing, material selection and the integration of building systems as elements discussed by the project team.[2]
Leadership
[edit]Jacqueline Aki is the Managing Director of James Cubitt Interiors. The Guardian identified Aki as the firm's Managing Director in its coverage of the 2026 Lagos Architects' Forum.[4]
Aki is also President of the Interior Designers Association of Nigeria (IDAN).[4] Earlier coverage by The Guardian and BusinessDay documented her participation in discussions concerning sustainability, professional regulation and the development of Nigeria's interior design industry.[5][6]
Awards and recognition
[edit]In 2019, James Cubitt Interiors was named Best Interior Design Consultancy – Nigeria in the BUILD Architecture Awards.[1]
The practice was subsequently named Interior Design Consultancy of the Year 2020 – Nigeria by BUILD.[7]
In the 2022–2023 African Property Awards, James Cubitt Interiors received awards for office interior projects involving Reckitt Benckiser in Lagos, Guinness Office and IFF, as well as recognition in the Mixed Use Architecture category for the Afreximbank African Trade Centre. [citation needed]
In 2024, MEA Markets named James Cubitt Interiors Best Bespoke Commercial Interior Design Studio 2024 – Nigeria and listed the practice as a recipient of its Hospitality Construction Excellence Award.[8]
