Ioannis Mitrou (also transliterated Yannis Mitrou or Yiannis Mitrou; Template:Lang-el) is a Greek philosopher, psychoanalyst, and visual-performance artist. He is the founder and director of Alma Kalma, the International Laboratory for Research in the Performing Arts, and teaches at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki's School of Fine Arts.[1][2] Also Artistic Director in the International Forum of Performace Arts festival for the last eight years.
Early life and education
[edit]Yiannis Mitrou was born and lives in Thessaloniki.[3] He graduated from the Department of Physics at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh) in 1996, followed by a postgraduate course in theoretical physics focused on chaos theory.[1] Between 1997 and 1999 he held a fellowship for original scientific research at the Institute of Nuclear Fusion in Orsay, near Paris, working on the relationship between art and science.[1][2]
He went on to earn a master's degree in systematic philosophy from AUTh's Department of Philosophy and Pedagogy in 2005.[1] From 2010 to 2013 he trained in psychoanalysis at the School of the Freudian Cause of the Freudian Society of Northern Greece, followed by supervised psychoanalytic training between 2014 and 2017.[1] In 2017 he completed a PhD titled Phenomenology of the Unconscious: The Example of the Lacanian Field, a joint programme between AUTh's Department of Philosophy and Pedagogy and the Department of Psychoanalysis at Paris VIII.[1][2]

[edit]Mitrou has taught at the School of Fine Arts of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Department of Visual and Applied Arts, for over five years, and teaches in the interdisciplinary postgraduate programme "Art and the Public Sphere."[1] He also teaches in the postgraduate programme of philosophy at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, and is set to teach in a new interdepartmental postgraduate programme titled "The Sacred and Art," jointly run by the Athens School of Fine Arts and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.[2] He is a partner researcher at the Visual Culture and Curating Laboratory of the University of Thessaly.[1]

International Forum for Performance Art
[edit]Mitrou is the artistic director of the International Forum for Performance Art (IFPA), which he founded in 2019.[4] Held annually every September in Drama, at the Agia Varvara theatre and the "Eleftheria" culture space, the forum runs as a parallel section of the Drama International Short Film Festival and is organised by the NGO Emphasis together with Alma Kalma, under the patronage of Greece's Ministry of Culture.[5][4] The sixth edition of the forum was held in 2024.[5][4]
Alma Kalma
[edit]In 2003, Mitrou founded the International Laboratory for Research in the Performing Arts, known as Alma Kalma, which he continues to direct.[1][2] Through Alma Kalma, Mitrou has developed a bio-dynamic method he calls "Biodynamics and the Principle of Least Action," which combines traditional Eastern theatre techniques with contemporary performance practice; the method has been recognised by the Grotowski Institute.[2] His choreographic approach, developed since 2009, centres on what he terms "body crinkles" and their relationship to space, objects, and other performative and media forms.[2]
Mitrou has collaborated with the Grotowski Institute in Wrocław, Poland, the Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards in Pontedera, Italy (2005–2017), the Department of Performing Experimental Arts of the Moscow Art Academy, and the art venue Art Klub in New Orleans, United States.[2] He has curated fourteen exhibitions in galleries, museums, and other art venues.[2]
Alma Kalma's work has been presented internationally, including the performance LUST, staged at the Institut Culturel du Mexique in Paris as part of the exhibition "La Petite Mort," with the support of the Greek embassy in France.[6] In Greece, the group has participated in the Back to Athens exhibition series, including No Apocalypse Now (2022), Three Shakespearean Murders During Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 (2023), and The Blue Flower and the Decay of the Aura (2024).[7]
Television
[edit]In 2017, Mitrou collaborated with the Greek public broadcaster ERT3 on a series of fourteen half-hour cultural television programmes titled The Black Square (Greek: Το Μαύρο Τετράγωνο), examining 20th-century art movements through philosophy and psychoanalysis. He conceived the series and served as its editor-in-chief and host.[2]

The book examines the body as lived experience, rather than biological mechanism, in relation to digital media, image and information, drawing on the phenomenology of Maurice Merleau-Ponty and the psychoanalysis of Jacques Lacan.[10][11]
