Incendio is an American instrumental Latin/world-fusion band formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1999 by guitarist Jim Stubblefield, guitarist Jean-Pierre “JP” Durand, and bassist/guitarist Liza Carbé. The group’s instrumental music combines Spanish and flamenco-influenced guitar with elements of Latin American music, jazz, rock, classical music, Middle Eastern music, Celtic music, and other world-music traditions.
Incendio has released ten full-length albums, one EP, and two DVD’s. The group’s recordings have appeared on the Billboard, NAV, and CMJ charts. They have been touring performing live shows since the bands inception primarily in the US but also abroad at festivals, theaters, performing arts centers, and concert series. Up until the 2020 pandemic, the group regularly performed over 100 concerts a year.
The group’s longtime performing lineup consists of Jim Stubblefield, Liza Carbé, Jean-Pierre Durand, and drummer Timothy Curle.
History
[edit]Background and Formation
[edit]Incendio was formed in 1999 and signed to Paras Recordings, releasing their first two albums, Misterioso in 2000 and Illumination in 2001. Paras Recordings was Jim Snowden’s latest label venture. He served as executive producer on both albums. Both albums debuted the band’s deft mix of world beats, electronic accents, signature melodies, and advanced guitar-playing.
In 2002, the Arizona Daily Wildcat gave Illumination an “A” rating and described Incendio as a Los Angeles-based modern pop-flamenco ensemble whose music extended beyond the new-flamenco style.
The group released their third album Intimo in 2003 on their own label, Incendio Music, a live-in-the-studio effort.
They were then signed to the British imprint New World Music and released two albums, self-titled Incendio in 2003 and then Seduction in 2006.
In 2005, Incendio released Dia y Noche, a live concert from The Temecula Theatre in Thousand Oaks CA and a live concert from the group’s performance at The Strawberry Music Festival in Yosemite CA. The project was released as a DVD and CD. This album was released on their own label, Incendio Music.
In 2009, Incendio released the group’s first guitar trio album, Vihuela. It explores a more classical compositional style in some pieces while maintaining the Latin and Celtic voice in many of the other compositions.
In 2013, the group released its next full band album, The Shape of Dreams. The group continued with their Latin style expanding to more traditional South American, Americana and reggaeton music rhythms and melodies.
Incendio’s first Christmas album, O Night Divine, was released in 2015 featuring their unique arrangements of well-loved Christmas songs. This was the first album featuring their current drummer Timothy Curle.
Their 10th album, Summoning the Muse, was released in 2019. This album harkened back to their Illumination album, incorporating more modern synth and loops as well as modern pop into their world music mix
Incendio also released the EP Embers, a five-track release featuring 3 oft-played covers and two live versions of popular Incendio songs.
Thus, Incendio’s catalog consists of ten full-length albums and one EP.
Musical style
[edit]Incendio’s music has been described as world fusion, Latin guitar, modern flamenco, jazz, and contemporary instrumental music.
All About Jazz described the group’s music as blending jazz, flamenco, rock, Latin, Spanish, world, classical, pop, Middle Eastern, and Celtic influences.
The band’s music is primarily instrumental and centers on nylon-string and acoustic guitars, bass, drums, and percussion. Electric guitar, keyboards, synthesizers, violin, horns, and other instruments have also been incorporated into its recordings and performances.
Latin American musical influences in Incendio’s work include bolero, cumbia, salsa, tango, mambo, and Peruvian vals criollo. The band has also drawn upon Middle Eastern, Indian, Celtic, Eastern European, rock, jazz, funk, pop, and classical traditions. The Arizona Daily Wildcat noted Middle Eastern, Latin, and African influences in the group’s first releases.
Improvisation is an important element of Incendio’s performances. The contrasting guitar styles of Stubblefield and Durand form a central component of the band’s sound, with Carbé providing bass and also performing as a third guitarist.
The individual members bring different influences to the group. Jim Stubblefield has described his own background as more progressive-rock oriented. JP Durand draws from blues and traditional South American music. Liza Carbé is influenced strongly by her studies of Classical and Spanish guitar, as well as rock and folk music.
The group is influenced by Paco de Lucía, Al Di Meola, John McLaughlin, Strunz & Farah, and Jesse Cook.
Live performances
[edit]Touring has been a major component of Incendio’s career.
The group has performed extensively throughout the United States and internationally, appearing at festivals, theaters, performing arts centers, outdoor concert series, clubs, and cultural events.
The band’s concerts emphasize improvisation and extended arrangements of its recorded material, taking on a more “jam band” approach to their live shows.
Incendio has appeared at venues and events including the Ford Amphitheatre in Los Angeles, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., Musikfest in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and many Levitt Pavilion or Levitt-affiliated venues, as located in Westport CT, Dayton OH, Los Angeles CA, Pasadena CA and many shows in their AMP series. The group has also performed at the Cutting Room in NYC, the Redlands Bowl, the Mauch Chunk Opera House in Jim Thorpe PA, and the Clayton Opera House in Clayton NY.
In 2018, the Williamsport Sun-Gazette, in previewing their show at the Williamsport Community Arts Center in Pennsylvania, described Incendio as a Billboard-charting instrumental group from Los Angeles whose music blended flamenco, jazz, classical, rock, and Celtic styles.
Incendio has performed multiple times as part of the National Gallery of Art’s Jazz in the Garden series in Washington, D.C.
In 2026, the Arizona Daily Star profiled Incendio in connection with a Tucson performance, discussing the group’s history and reputation for energetic, improvisational performances.
That same year, Culver City News profiled the group in connection with a performance at Boulevard Music and discussed Incendio’s formation, musical style, career, and touring history.
