Hypershell is a Chinese company that develops powered exoskeletons for the consumer market.[3] It was founded in 2021 by Kelvin Sun.[1][2] Its wearable robots assist human movement, including in outdoor settings.[3]

History

[edit]

Hypershell launched a product crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter in March 2023.[4] According to Fast Company, the company had raised approximately US$1.3 million through Kickstarter and Indiegogo by 2023.[2]

The company raised an undisclosed amount in a Series A funding round in 2024.[2] Its published timeline dates the start of X series mass production and deliveries to August of that year.[5] In January 2025, Hypershell announced that global sales of the X series were scheduled to open on 20 January.[6]

In November 2025, Hypershell raised a combined US$70 million in pre-Series B and Series B funding. The Series B round was co-led by Luminous Ventures and 5Y Capital, with participation from Meituan Dragonball.[3] In May 2026, it raised a further US$50 million in a Series B+ round led by Ant Group and Meituan Dragonball.[3]

Also in May 2026, the company introduced the X Pro S, X Max S and X Ultra S.[7] It announced the Hypershell Halo at the IFA trade show in Berlin in September.[8]

Products and technology

[edit]

The Hypershell X series consists of wearable lower-body exoskeletons that provide powered assistance at the hips. The devices attach to the wearer through a waist harness and thigh straps, and are designed for consumer activities such as walking and hiking.[9]

The X Pro S, X Max S and X Ultra S, introduced in 2026, use the company's HyperIntuition motion-control system.[7] The Halo, announced later that year, extends powered assistance to both the hips and knees.[8]

Reception

[edit]

Reviews of X series models in Stuff and Wired praised their powered assistance, while noting drawbacks including cost, battery life and the physical burden of wearing the device.[10][7] Outside noted that the waist harness could interfere with the load-bearing hip belts of some backpacking packs.[9]

[edit]

In 2025, SGS awarded its Premium Performance Mark to the Hypershell X series.[23]

In May 2026, TÜV Rheinland announced a verification statement for the new X series, covering the Pro S, Max S and Ultra S models. The verification assessed assistance response time and synchronization between the device and the wearer's gait.[24]
