Huupe, Inc. (stylized as '''huupe''') is an American sports technology company that develops interactive basketball training and home entertainment systems.[1] The company is known for creating the world's first smart basketball hoop, equipping the backboard with a digital screen, sensors, cameras, and artificial intelligence.[2] huupe currently manufactures a range of products, including the huupe PRO, huupe mini, huupe arcade, and huupe ARENA.[3]
Description
[edit]huupe’s product line uses a combination of LiDAR-based sensors, cameras, and artificial intelligence to collect and analyze basketball players' key performance data, including the users' shooting percentages, shooting locations, and shot placement.[4] The information is displayed on the backboard’s HD digital screens and can be accessed on the user’s smartphone through the huupe mobile app.[5]
The company's software platform offers remote multiplayer competition and basketball training programs.[6] With a “huupe+” membership, users gain access to the company’s full fitness and gaming suite, including daily prize challenges.[7] The "huupe League" is the company’s global ranking system for top shooting percentages and total points scored across its platforms, updated in real time on the company website.[8]
History
[edit]huupe was founded in 2019 by Wisconsin entrepreneurs and childhood friends Paul Anton and Lyth Saeed.[9] The idea for creating a smart basketball hoop originated in 2011, when Anton left Wisconsin to attend Boston College.[10] During this time, Anton and Saeed began exchanging videos of themselves playing basketball through Snapchat.[11] While attending San Francisco Law School, Anton developed a pair of augmented reality glasses designed specifically for basketball players at a company called Real Shot.[12] In 2019, Saeed was asked to test the product and suggested that rather than the glasses, they should integrate a digital screen into the basketball backboard itself.[13] huupe launched formally sixty days later, and the first prototype of the smart basketball hoop was unveiled the following year.[14]
In 2022, huupe began commercial sales of the huupe PRO, a regulation-sized basketball hoop with a digital screen, a mounted camera, and AI-powered shot-tracking technology.[15] The system records and displays the user's key performance metrics on the backboard, such as shooting percentage and shot placements.[16] It also enables multiplayer competition with other huupe users, supports media streaming, and offers training programs designed by professional coaches.[17] Several commentators have compared the huupe PRO to companies like Peloton because of its combination of subscription-based content and performance-tracking capabilities.[18][13]
In 2023, huupe announced that it had raised over $11 million in venture funding.[19] Its investors include Genesis Ventures, Deep Capital Group, Protagonist VC, TRI Investments, Keith Mardak, George Daskalakis, and former NBA players Thaddeus Young and Trevor Booker.[20] Early investors and board members include Aristotle Loumis and Audie Attar.[21]
In August 2024, huupe released the huupe mini, a compact indoor version of the huupe PRO that uses sensors and LiDAR-based ball tracking technology to record users' key performance metrics.[22] According to the company, the huupe mini was intentionally designed without cameras to preserve user privacy in their homes, a choice that required several times the engineering effort.[23] As of September 2026, over 40,000 huupe mini’s have been sold, making it huupe's top-selling product.[24]
In August 2024, a huupe Pro was publicly installed at Tompkins Square Park in New York City.[25] New York City Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue, along with several other community leaders, attended the grand unveiling.[26]
In September 2024, huupe released the huupe arcade, a product that contains the huupe mini mounted within an automated ball-return system.[27]
In 2025, huupe partnered with Virgin Megastores to expand the distribution of the huupe Mini across the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Kuwait, in addition to several other international retailers such as Costco, Sam’s Club, and Best Buy.[28]
In October 2025, Basketball Hall of Famers Tracy McGrady and Vince Carter joined the company, with McGrady serving as huupe’s Chief Innovation Officer and Carter as the strategic advisor.[29] According to the company, McGrady's and Carter's years of professional playing experience contributed greatly to the product design of the huupe ARENA.[30]
In June 2026, huupe released the huupe ARENA, a regulation-sized basketball hoop with an LED lighting display and advanced shot-tracking capabilities.[31] The system records players' shooting metrics using sensors and artificial intelligence, then uploads the data to the user's smartphone.[32]
