Hooft Island is an artificial man-made island which was built in the 1920's and named after poet and author Pieter Corneliszoon Hooft. It was built to test construction method's, it was used to experiment how wave's hit artificial land and how sediment moves around new islands, construction began in 1928 and finished in 1929, the island was created by pumping sand from the zuiderzee seabed (modern ijselmeer) the sand was pumped into a raised mound, this same technique would be later used to build the Noordoostpolder, Flevoland, Marker Wadden, t'Hooft was one of the earliest of this method, t' Hooft was also used as training ground for workers, thousands of workers were needed for the Zuiderzee work's where workers would learn dredging, sand deposition, early polder construction, dike reinforcement after the zuiderzee work's were finished (1930s) it was quietly abandoned, this led to many birds settling Hooft island they brought seeds that stuck to their feather's or dropped them in their dropping's, this started the island's wind-blown seed's and pioneer plant's took root on Hooft island these plants stabilized the sand and allowed shrub's and other specie's to grow, with little to no human interference wind sculpted surface the island's sandy surface into small dune's and the island would for waterbird's, small mammal's, insect's, coastal plant's, t' Hooft became protected as a valuable natural refuge in the IJmeer, today t' Hooft is a overgrown island which has a mass amount of insects on it it serves as a safe bird sanctuary because people don't regularly visit the island bird nests can rest without disturbance the island also improves, the shallow waters around the island create feeding grounds for various fish species, calm zones for aquatic plants, the island also reduces wave energy, boat disturbance, shoreline erosion,
