Heinz Kessler (born 19 August 1938 in Vienna) is an Austrian businessman. He was chairman of the executive board (CEO) of the paper manufacturer Nettingsdorfer Papierfabrik AG from 1982 to 2003, and president of the Federation of Austrian Industry (Industriellenvereinigung, IV) from 1988 to 1996.

Life

Kessler studied in Vienna and completed a doctorate in 1964.^[1] During his studies he already completed internships at paper and pulp mills in Austria and abroad.^[1]^[2]

Career

Kessler joined Nettingsdorfer Papierfabrik AG, in Nettingsdorf (part of Ansfelden, Upper Austria), in 1964^[2]^[3] (Holzkurier gives 1966^[1]). He became a member of the executive board in 1974, and served as chairman of the executive board (CEO) from 1 January 1982 to 31 August 2003.^[2] Since 2003 he has been chairman of the supervisory board.^[1]

From 16 June 1988 to 23 May 1996 Kessler served as president of the Federation of Austrian Industry, succeeding Christian Beurle and succeeded by Peter Mitterbauer.^[2]

He has also held numerous other positions: chairman of the board of the Stepski private foundation (Stepski-Privatstiftung), deputy chairman of the supervisory board of Duropack AG, member of the supervisory board of Investkredit Bank AG, chairman of the supervisory board of Erste Bank der oesterreichischen Sparkassen AG (Erste Bank) and of Reform-Werke Bauer & Co GesmbH, and third deputy chairman of the supervisory board of UNIQA Versicherungen AG. Since its founding on 19 May 2000 he has chaired the working group ARGE "Plattform humanitäre Aktion".^[2]

On his 70th birthday in 2008, Austrian Federal President Heinz Fischer sent a letter of congratulations praising Kessler's contributions to the Austrian economy, both at the head of Nettingsdorfer Papierfabrik and as president of the Federation of Austrian Industry.^[4]
