Hanakappa (Japanese: はなかっぱ) is a Japanese anime television series, based on a Japanese children's picture book written by Tadashi Akiyama. This anime has been running on NHK Educational TV since March 29, 2010.[1]
In 2012, the Sankei Living newspaper company reported that Hanakappa was the third most popular character among surveyed kindergarten students, after Pretty Cure and Doraemon.[2]

[edit]Before the anime aired, the books published were focused on ecology and featured a city called "Pork City," which doesn't appear in the anime. This city suffers from environmental problems such as air pollution and garbage. Newer books published after the TV anime aired use the settings and characters from the anime.
