Habib Abdulredha Al Mail (Arabic: حبيب عبد الرضا الميل; 3 July 1942 – 25 April 2003) was a Kuwaiti major general (staff) who served as the first commander of the Kuwait Naval Force from 1974 to 1986.^[1] Earlier in his career, he played as a footballer for Al-Uruba (later Al-Arabi SC) and appeared in international matches for the Kuwait national football team.^[1]

Early life

Al Mail was born in the Sharq district of Kuwait City on 3 July 1942.^[1] He attended Al-Sharqiya School and Shuwaikh Secondary School. In 1959, he entered the Naval College in Alexandria, Egypt, graduating in 1961.^[1]^[2]

Football career

Al Mail joined Al-Uruba as a football player in 1957, remaining with the club after it was renamed Al-Arabi SC.^[1] During this period, he also represented the Kuwait national football team in early international fixtures played abroad.^[1]

Military career

Upon graduating from the Naval College in 1961, Al Mail commissioned as a First Lieutenant in the Coast Guard unit under the Ministry of Interior, where he commanded boat squadrons.^[1] He served with the Coast Guard until 1973, reaching the rank of Major.^[1]

Kuwait Naval Force

On 11 June 1973, Al Mail transferred from the Coast Guard to the Kuwaiti Army to assist in organizing a regular naval force.^[1] On 22 November 1973, he was named Head of Naval Staff within the Military Operations Directorate at General Staff Headquarters. An Amiri decree on 24 November 1973 formally confirmed his rank as Major in the Army.^[1]^[3]^[2]

Al Mail directed the initial administrative and operational setup of the new branch, drafting plans for coastal defence and fleet organization.^[1]^[4] Appointed as the first Commander of the Kuwait Naval Force in 1974, he held the post until 1986.^[1] He retired from military service in 1991 at the rank of Major General (Staff).^[1]

The primary auditorium at Mohammed Al-Ahmad Naval Base was designated as Major General Staff Habib Al Mail Hall.^[5] The Kuwait Hunting and Equestrian Club also holds an annual competition, the Major General Habib Al Mail Cup, named in his memory.^[6]

Death

Al Mail died on 25 April 2003.^[1]
