Gulabuddin Sukhanwar (Persian: گلاب‌الدین سخنور; born 1982) is an Afghan-born writer and translator based in Trondheim, Norway.[1][2] He was responsible for the Literature for Inclusion programme at Litteraturhuset i Trondheim until 2024 and served on Arts Council Norway's expert committee for literature in 2022 and 2023.[3][2]

Early life and education

[edit]

Sukhanwar was born in 1982 and grew up in a village in Bamyan Province, Afghanistan. His family moved to Kabul in 2003. He studied political science and law before leaving Afghanistan in 2013. After arriving in Norway, he spent approximately a year at a refugee reception center in Vadsø and later attended the Nansen Academy in Lillehammer, where he studied philosophy, literature and politics.[1]

In 2016, Sukhanwar participated in the Norwegian University of Science and Technology's Academic Guest Network, a program for refugees with academic backgrounds. Through the program he attended the master's-level English literature course Of Borders and Travelers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).[4]

Career

[edit]

In October 2017, Sukhanwar began a one-year position as a cultural trainee at Litteraturhuset i Trondheim.[1] The organization's 2018 annual report states that its Literature for Inclusion program had been initiated in 2017 with support from Arts Council Norway and was developed and managed by Sukhanwar himself. Activities organized through the program included writing courses, literary discussions, poetry events and programs focusing on literature from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds.[5] He later served as programme coordinator and remained responsible for the initiative until 2024.[3]

In 2018, Sukhanwar gave a TEDxTrondheim talk titled "Literature for Inclusion".[6] The following year, he was among six writers and artists who participated in the Falstad Centre project Faces of the Power – Art in the Commander's Residence.[7]

Sukhanwar served as a member of Arts Council Norway's expert committee for literature for the 2022–2023 term. The committee considered funding for literary projects, production, dissemination and school libraries.[2]

Writing and translation

[edit]

In 2015, he published the essay "Mine to land" ("My Two Countries") in the Norwegian cultural journal Samtiden.[8]

In 2024, Sukhanwar and Mohib Ali Altaf translated Aga Khan III's memoirs into Persian. The translation was published by Formbook under the title خاطرات آقا خان سوم.[9]

In 2025, he translated the memoire of Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan from English to Persian that was published by Formbook under the title شهزاده صدرالدین آقاخان. The original memoire was written by Diana Miserez. [10][11]
