Draft:Giants Chair

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Giants Chair is an American emo and post-hardcore band formed in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1993.[1] The line-up consists of lead vocalist and guitarist Scott Hobart, bassist Byron Collum, and drummer Paul Ackerman.[2] Active throughout the 1990s, the band released two full-length studio albums before disbanding in 1997, later reuniting in 2017 to release new material.[1]

History

[edit]

Formation and early years (1993–1997)

[edit]

Giants Chair was formed in 1993 by Scott Hobart, Byron Collum, and Paul Ackerman.[1] The group became an active part of the 1990s Midwestern emo and post-hardcore music scenes, frequently touring alongside regional contemporaries such as Boys Life and Shiner.[3]

In 1993, the band released a split 7-inch single with Boys Life through Hit It! Recordings.[2] They followed with their debut full-length studio album, Red & Clear, in 1995 on Hit It! Recordings and Caulfield Records.[2] Their second studio album, Purity and Control, was released in 1996 through Caulfield Records.[2]

Following extensive touring, the group disbanded in 1997. Following the breakup, drummer Paul Ackerman went on to form The Farewell Bend alongside members of Boys Life.

Reunion and recent activity (2017–present)

In 2017, the original members of Giants Chair reunited to write and record new music.[1] In December 2019, the band released their third studio album, Prefabylon, via Spartan Records, marking their first full-length album in 23 years.[3]

Musical style and influence

[edit]

Giants Chair's sound is characterized by driving rhythm sections, angular guitar riffs, and dynamic vocal delivery characteristic of 1990s post-hardcore and emo.[3]

Their music has been cited as a primary influence by musician Stephen Brodsky (Cave In), who formed the side project Kid Kilowatt in 1996 out of inspiration from Giants Chair.[4]
