Georgi Stanishev (Sr), eminent Bulgarian architect, architectural critic and academic, MA (UACEG), PhD (MARCHI), Professor IAA (2003), Professor UACEG (2016), founder of Prospectum (2000), a master planning and architecture design studio.

Biography

Georgi Stanishev was born on March 23, 1953 in Vologda, Soviet Union. He is the son of Dimitar Stanishev a Bulgarian historian and politician, and of Dina Stanisheva, professor in structural linguistics. Georgi Stanishev has moved to Bulgaria with his parents in 1957, and since then lives in Sofia. He graduated from the Higher Institute of Architecture and Construction in Sofia (1975) and had his Doctorate in the field of Architectural Semiotics at the Moscow Architecture Institute (1982).

Back to Bulgaria, Stanishev was appointed as editor in chief of Architecture and Society (1983-87) an international architectural magazine published by the Union of Architects of Bulgaria. Later in 1989 he was invited as a director and editor of Concept, a department featuring young visionary architects worldwide in the London based periodical World Architecture (1988-98).

In parallel Stanishev developed a career as an academic, at the Department of Theory and history of architecture, at the University of Architecture Civil Engineering and Geodesy, Sofia, where he started as an assistant professor (1988), and later was three times elected as the department Chairman, and further a professor. (2005-16). In this period, he was elected a member of Comité International des Critiques d'Architecture (CICA, 2006) based in Paris, and a professor of the international academy of architecture, (IAA, 2003).

Georgi Stanishev is a co-founder and vice president of the International Iakov Chernikhov Foundation, (established 1989 with Andrey Chernikhov, the ICIF President).

Architecture practice

Georgi Stanishev Sr is the founder and principal of the Prospectum, an award-winning architecture practice for master planning and architectural design (established 2000). His studio has produced numerous projects and buildings, master plans, exhibitions, that include several works winning the National Building of the Year First Price Award (2013 and 2023), as well as the Archinova Special Award (2025). Architectural projects of Georgi Stanishev have been invited and shown in many international exhibitions, including in London, AA School of Architecture, (2000), Moscow, Manezh, (20012), Vienna, Ringturm Gallery, (2018), and other locations. Recently his projects in the field of residential and hospitality architecture (settlements, apartment buildings and hotels) in Austria, Bulgaria, Greece, and Zanzibar, has focused international attention and has been published in the Bulgarian and the international press.

Exhibition curatorial

Georgi Stanishev Sr was an initiator of a series exhibitions in Sofia (National Gallery for Foreign Art, VIVACOM Art Hall), showing the current works of the Zaha Hadid Architects (2006), Norman Foster Architecture (2008), Rudy Ricciotti Architecture (2018), Harry Seidler Architecture (2020, with Vladimir Belogolovsky). In 2008 Stanishev was selected as the curator of the Bulgarian Pavilion at the Venice Biennial, 2008 (with the participation of Vessela Nozharova). He also was the initiator and co-organiser (with Andrey Chernikhov), of the travelling Iakov Chernikhov Intl Exhibition, shown in Sofia, Frankfurt/Main, New York (Columbia, GSAP) and Athens, (in the period 1990-2000), as well as of the International Iakov Chernikhov Prize, aimed to support young architects and visionary architecture worldwide (2002-2018).

Studio 44, Editor and author, Thames and Hudson, London, 2020. A book making a dissection of the professional ideology and strategy of a famous architecture practise of Nikita and Oleg Yavein, from St Petersburg, Russia.

Family

Georgi Stanishev Sr is married to Vassilia Stanisheva, architect, 1951. With her he has two sons, who are both architects: Dimitar Stanishev (b. 1978) and Georgi Stanishev Jr. (b. 1986). The former is a sailing skipper and owner of a chartering company in Greece. The latter is an architect and scenographer in France, having numerous exhibition and fashion pavilion designs in France, Switzerland, China, Japan, the USA.

The brother of Georgi Stanishev Sr is a well-recognised Bulgarian politician, who was the chairman of the Bulgarian Socialist Party, and the President of the Party of European Socialists (2005-2013), as well as the Prime Minister of Bulgaria 2005- 2009.
