Garry West is an American bassist, record producer and record-label executive.[1] He is the co-founder and CEO of Compass Records, an independent record label based in Nashville, Tennessee, which he established with musician Alison Brown in 1995.[2]

Career

[edit]

West toured Europe as a bassist with singer-songwriter Michelle Shocked alongside Alison Brown. During the tour, he and Brown developed plans for a record label, recording studio and publishing company.[3] They subsequently founded Compass Records, which launched in 1995.[4][5]

West played bass on "No Ash Will Burn", from Altan's 2015 album The Widening Gyre,[6] and also worked as a producer on the album.[7] His production credits include Mike Farris's Silver & Stone (2018), recorded at Nashville's Hillbilly Central studio,[8] and Davina and the Vagabonds' Sugar Drops (2019), recorded at Compass Sound Studio and released by Red House Records.[9]

In 2021, West and Brown shared the International Bluegrass Music Association's Collaborative Recording of the Year award as producers of Bobby Osborne's recording of "White Line Fever".[10]
