Fantastic Four: First Foes is a series of four tie-in one-shot comics published by Marvel Comics, based on the superhero team the Fantastic Four. They serve as a prequel to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025) and—much like the previous tie-in one-shot, Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025)—are presented as in-universe comics published by the Future Foundation and expand on characters and moments from the film.

The four comics are expected to be released quarterly throughout 2026, starting in March.

Fantastic Four: First Foes explores an early adventure of the Fantastic Four facing off against René Rodin / Mad Thinker, who is determined to get his proper due by turning New York City against its heroic patrons.[1]

Fantastic Four: First Foes – Shalla-Bal

Fantastic Four: First Foes – Shalla-Bal focuses on how Shalla-Bal became Galactus's herald, the Silver Surfer, before the events of the film The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025).[2]

Fantastic Four: First Foes – Dragon Man

Fantastic Four: First Foes – Dragon Man sees Ben Grimm / The Thing struggling with his rocky form as a potential cure for his condition emerges and involves the android Dragon Man.[3]

Characters

Fantastic Four: First Foes introduces characters not featured in the film The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025), including: René Rodin / Mad Thinker;[4] his creation, the original character Super-Adaptive Android—based on both the Super-Adaptoid and the Awesome Android (the latter also being an in-universe creation of the Mad Thinker from the comics);[5] and the android Dragon Man.[3]

Following the July 2025 publication of Fantastic Four: First Steps—the tie-in one-shot comic that serves as a prequel to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film The Fantastic Four: First Steps, released that same month—Marvel Comics announced in December four additional tie-in one-shot comics that, similar to the First Steps one-shot, are presented as in-universe comics published by the Future Foundation and expand on characters and moments from the film; the four comics are expected to be released quarterly throughout 2026. The first one-shot, titled Fantastic Four: First Foes,[1] was released on March 25, 2026.[2] It was written by Dan Slott, with Mark Buckingham and Phil Noto respectively returning as artist and cover artist from the First Steps one-shot.[1] Joe Caramagna and Alex Sinclair also return as letterer and colorist from that comic, respectively.[6] A two-page short story written by Ryan North, "Fantastic Science", is also included, which is inspired by Reed's educational television programming as seen in the film.[1]

The second one-shot, titled Fantastic Four: First Foes – Shalla-Bal, was written by North and Charles Soule,[7] with Buckingham and Noto once again respectively returning as artist and cover artist.[2] It is scheduled for release on July 8, 2026.[7][8] The one-shot was previously expected to be released in June.[2] The third one-shot is titled Fantastic Four: First Foes – Dragon Man and was written by Greg Pak, with Buckingham returning as artist from the previous comics. It is scheduled for release in September 2026.[3]
