The Fajr 224 (Persian: فجر ۲۲۴) is an Iranian-manufactured assault rifle functioning as an unlicensed domestic variant and clone of the American M4 carbine platform. Chambered for the standard 5.56×45mm NATO cartridge, it represents part of Iran's ongoing diversification into Western-pattern individual combat weapons alongside platforms like the Masaf and DIO S 5.56.
History
[edit]Developed under the oversight of Iran's Defense Industries Organization (DIO), the Fajr 224 emerged during the 2020s as a low-visibility, niche alternative to mainstream service arms like local G3 and AK-pattern rifles. Mechanically mirroring the layout of the U.S. M4 carbine, it utilizes a direct impingement gas system, an aluminum receiver framework, a telescoping stock, and compatibility with standard STANAG magazines.
While standard military forces in Iran rely heavily on traditional platforms, the Fajr 224 has seen limited distribution and usage among specialized military and security branches domestically, as well as select allied regional units.
