Eve Marie Little is an American local politician and college academic who has served as an at-large member of the Newark City Council since December 2024.[1][2] She was selected by her council colleagues to serve as the city's vice mayor for 2025.[3] Outside of politics, Little teaches hospitality and tourism courses at California State University - East Bay, and Mission College.[4]
Early life and education
[edit]Little was born in Midland, small town in West Texas to an American father and a Mexican mother from the city of Guadalajara.[1] She earned a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies, with minors in Cultural Anthropology and Spanish, from Texas A&M University.[1][4] During her undergraduate studies she worked as a translator in Quito, Ecuador, and in hospitality marketing for a sustainable-tourism hotel chain in Lima, Peru.[1]
After graduating, Little taught at Kookmin University in Seoul, South Korea, before working in the tourism industry in Khao Lak, Thailand.[1][4] She later returned to Texas to complete a Master of Science in Hospitality Management at the University of Houston's Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management[1][4]
Career
[edit]Before entering college academia, Little had a diverse background in hospitality, event planning and diplomatic affairs. She worked in Houston, Texas as the Catering Director with the NASA Johnson Space Center's conference center, Executive Director of the Texas Dragon Boat Association, and Director of Consular Affairs for the Consulate of Ghana.[4][1]
Little has taught hospitality, recreation, and tourism courses at California State University - East Bay since 2017, and has also taught at Mission College and Austin University.[4][5] Through Mission College, she also teaches vocational courses to incarcerated students through the Rising Scholars program at the Elmwood Correctional Facility.[4][5] She also operates FRESA Linguistics, a Spanish-language translation business.[5]
Little is the author of a children's book, Who Wants to Be Friends with a Dragon?, about inclusion, diversity, and friendship, for which she received an Independent Press Award.[1]
Newark City Council

[edit]Little ran for an at-large seat on the Newark City Council in a special general election held November 5, 2024, as one of five candidates, the others being Phil Bloxom, Lucia Gutierrez, Sean Mahanay, and Renu Malhotra, and finished first with 40.3% of the vote (5,753 votes).[6][7] Her campaign, endorsed by both former mayors, David Smith and Alan Nagy, along with former vice mayor Luis Freitas and several other city leaders.[8]
Tenure
[edit]Little was sworn into office on December 12, 2024, alongside fellow newly elected council members Terrence Grindall and Julie Del Catancio, as part of what local media described as the city's first major council turnover in more than fifty years; longtime members Ana Apodaca, Sucy Collazo, and Luis Freitas all stepped down the same evening.[2] Mayor Michael Hannon, who won re-election in the same November 2024 cycle, presided over the swearing-in.[2][6]
In the council's annual rotation of leadership, Little served as vice mayor for 2025;[3] Fellow council member Matthew Jorgens was later passed the role in early 2026.[9] Little's council assignments have included the Alameda County Fire Advisory Commission, the Tri-City Elderly Coalition, and the Alameda-Contra CostaTransit District.[1]
