Eric M. Bachelder is an American chemical engineer and Associate Professor in the Division of Pharmacoengineering and Molecular Pharmaceutics at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is known for inventing acetalated dextran (Ace-DEX), a biodegradable, acid-labile polymer widely used in vaccine and drug delivery research.[1] As of 2026, the original paper describing Ace-DEX has been cited over 560 times and is the subject of multiple reviews.[2][3] This work was patented as a modified polyhydroxylated polymer for acid-degradable drug and antigen delivery, with Bachelder listed as a co-inventor alongside Jean Fréchet, Tristan Beaudette, and Kyle Broaders.[4]

Education

Bachelder earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering from Michigan State University, where he conducted undergraduate research on post-harvest distillation under Professor Kris Berglund, a University Distinguished Professor known for his work in fermentation and distillation technologies.[5][6][7]

He went on to complete a Ph.D. in chemical and biomolecular engineering at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, training in the laboratory of immunologist Polly Matzinger at the National Institutes of Health as a predoctoral Intramural Research Training Award (IRTA) fellow.[5][8][9]

He subsequently completed postdoctoral training at the University of California, Berkeley under Jean M. J. Fréchet, where he developed acetalated dextran as a tunable, acid-degradable biomaterial for particulate immunotherapy.[10]

Research

Bachelder's research centers on the design of acid-degradable and immunomodulatory biomaterials, particularly acetalated dextran-based micro- and nanoparticles, for controlled delivery of vaccine antigens and adjuvants. His work has contributed to platforms for influenza and other infectious disease vaccines, as well as cancer immunotherapy and tolerance induction for autoimmune conditions.[3][11][12][13]
