East Duo is a Georgian instrumental music group. Established in 2021, the group uses traditional Georgian folk instruments, such as the panduri, in its compositions. The group consists of Levan Bantsadze, Giorgi Matkava, and Mamuka Matkava. They are signed to Kingsmen Records.
History
[edit]The members of the group began collaborating in 2019. In 2021, the group recorded the track "Chubina" using an iPhone 6. The recording took place in Tbilisi and Poti.[1] The panduri used in the recording was built by Mamuka Matkava, who has been a luthier since the age of 13.[2]
2024–2026 activity
[edit]"Chubina" received international attention in 2024. The track reached number 66 on the Shazam Global Top 200 and appeared on iTunes charts in Germany, Chile, and France.[3] By 2026, the track had reached 130 million streams on Spotify.[4]
In March 2026, East Duo was featured in a campaign by the Bank of Georgia. This campaign resulted in coverage from Forbes Georgia, Business Insider Georgia, On.ge, and Marketer.ge.[5][6][7][8]
Production and sessions
[edit]The group's music is instrumental and uses Georgian polyphonic structures. Their work includes elements of ambient music and ethno-jazz.[9]
The group has released two location-based video projects. The Svaneti Session was filmed in 2025 in northwestern Georgia.[10] The Tskaltubo Session was released in March 2026.[11]
In June 2026, 1883 Magazine published a feature on East Duo's release "Chubina (Chill)" and the accompanying Tskaltubo Session.[12]
Both projects were produced by Kingsmen Records.[13]
