Dinos Tavridis (Greek: Κωνσταντίνος (Ντίνος) Ταυρίδης) also known as Konstantinos or Constantinos Tavridis is a Greek TV producer, presenter, music curator, journalist, actor and artistic director for television and theatre.

Biography

Born in Thessaloniki, Greece he graduated with honours from the National Theatre of Northern Greece in 1970. While a student, he started theatre acting and after moving to Athens, spending time between New York and Paris and founding ACT Productions[1] in 1985, he transitioned to TV production, producing television shows and international co-productions. He started out as a presenter covering shows on Greek national television and is notable for his international collaborations that both showcased Greek culture abroad but also drew renowned artists to Greece not only through organising various events but also via co-founding and serving as Artistic Director for the Festival of Ancient Olympia[2][3]

Currently in London, he continues to work on new projects.

Career

Theatre and Television

Tavridis started out as an actor while a 2nd year drama student in 1968 when he was selected by director Kostis Mihailidis[4] to play Cardinal Richelieu, in the production of Edmond Rostand’s play “Cyrano de Bergerac (play)”, for the National Theatre of Northern Greece. He played various classic and modern roles for 9 consecutive years at the theatre’s repertory in Thessaloniki[5][6][7][8][9] and in the ancient theatres of Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus[10], Philippi, the Hellenistic theatre of Dion and at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus in Athens[11], closing his acting career with the role of Pontius Pilate in the 1978 production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Jesus Christ Superstar in Athens[12].

After theatre acting, he began his career in the TV industry as a presenter in 1977, with a weekly, 15 minutes travel-show in ERT-2 National TV channel called “EXPRESS 315”, followed by touristic show, “FLIGHT AT 10,000 meters”[13] for Olympic Airways.

TV productions & co-productions

While known as a TV personality, Tavridis is more recognized from the work undertaken after founding ACT PRODUCTIONS[1] (ACT T.V. Theatre and Movie Productions ltd) in 1985. Starting with drama series and game shows, the Tavridis collaborated with French directors such as André Flédérick at IMDb, Sonia Cantalapiedra at IMDb and Michel Favart to promote Greek culture outside its borders[14][15].

With satire being another pillar of culture, controversy was stirred up regarding the Greek version of the French TV satirical show the Le Bébête Show with comedian star Lakis Lazopoulos when the then government banned its broadcast.[16].

A collaboration with Flédéric for the production of “Life is a Cinema”, a weekly 60’ variety show was unfortunately cancelled when the hostess Aliki Vouyouklaki was suddenly diagnosed with cancer and passed away shortly after.

Artistic Director

In 1997, Tavridis co-founded the Festival of Ancient Olympia[17][2] in the birthplace of the Olympic Games launching its first season with the dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov. These first 2 years saw him as Artistic Director[3] of the Festival where it hosted not only Greek music and theatre but also international artists such as the Japanese drummers KODO[18] and the soloists of the Bolshoi Ballet[19] and Mariinsky Ballet Russian ballets. His 2nd stint in the role in 2001 began with an exclusive concert by opera singer Dame Kiri Te Kanawa accompanied by the Athens State Symphonic Orchestra with the participation of Spanish flamenco dancer Cristina Hoyos and her group, as well as the young soloists of the Paris Opera Ballet among others. During this time, the Golden Kotinos was introduced as part of the festival (the olive wreath that was the award to the champions of the ancient Olympic games), a yearly honorary prize for distinguished international artists for their contributions to the world of Arts.

Other Activities

Tavridis has also been active in areas outside Television and Theatre. In the summer of 1985, he launched the first Greek private night-club “PRISON”. In 1991 he promoted soprano Julia Migenes’ concert[20] at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus in Athens and was co-promoter to Sir Elton John’s concert[21] in 2000, at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, for the Athens Epidaurus Festival.

In addition to the arts, he also worked as a journalist for 2 years in the weekly Greek magazine Fantazio[22].

Recent Years

Based in London since the late 2000s, he started off by producing “The Ever-Lasting Light” at IMDb, a weekly programme for the UK’s Hellenic TV. He is working on the production of an epic play "The Throne of Blood", based on and inspired by the tragedies of the Greek classic authors.
