Diamantis Karanastasis (Διαμαντής Καραναστάσης; born 2 March 1974) is a Greek actor, filmmaker, director, and producer. Diamantis works in theatre, cinema, and television since 1998, with credits in significant productions of the Greek stage and screen. He has received awards for his film work and is one of the leading voice-over artists in Greece.[1][2]

He is also the founder and creator of Birigogo, a start-up that develops interactive educational applications based on ancient Greek drama and mythology.[3]

In the June 2023 national elections, Diamantis was elected Member of Parliament with Course of Freedom (Plefsi Eleftherias).[4][5] In November 2025, he resigned to devote himself fully to his artistic work.[6][7]

Early life

Diamantis Karanastasis was born on 2 March 1974 in Larissa, where he grew up until the age of 18, before moving to Athens to pursue his studies and, ultimately, a career in theatre.[2][8]

Education

In 1992, through the Greek National University Entrance Examinations, Diamantis Karanastasis succeeded in the national exams and was admitted to the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), one of Greece's most competitive programmes. The following year he also passed the entrance exams for the Department of Mathematics at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. He did not complete either degree, choosing instead to commit fully to theatre studies.[2][9]

Diamantis Karanastasis has been working in theatre for over three decades, collaborating with distinguished Greek artists throughout his career. Among his notable stage appearances are Three Sisters by Anton Chekhov and Love, Love, Love by Mike Bartlett, both at the Karolos Koun Art Theatre under the direction of Marianna Calbari;[10][11] Trelo Aima (Wild Blood) by Pandelis Prevelakis, adapted and directed by Angela Brouskou at the Karolos Koun Art Theatre (2015);[12] Fear by Stefan Zweig, directed by Elena Penga at the Municipal Theatre of Kalamata (2015-16);[13][14] Love and Anarchy by Lina Wertmüller, directed by Yiannis Laspias at Bios (2019);[15] and Bremen Freedom by Rainer Werner Fassbinder, directed by Nikos Mastorakis at the Municipal Theatre of Crete and the Karolos Koun Art Theatre (2022-23), among many others.[16]

In 2026, Diamantis wrote, directed, and performed in Agon: A Contest of Logos, a theatre performance staged as an ancient Greek agon, a confrontation between human and artificial intelligence. The work examines the relationship between creator and creation, through classical texts from antiquity to the present day. It was first presented at the Zincirli Mosque (Ζιντζιρλί Τζαμί) in Serres, as part of the "All of Greece, One Culture" programme of the Greek Ministry of Culture.[17][18][19]

Diamantis Karanastasis has acted in, directed, and produced both feature films and short films. Among his acting credits, he played the lead in Timeless Stories (2017), directed by Vassilis Raisis, which won the Audience Award at the 58th Thessaloniki International Film Festival.[20][21] In the biographical film Stelios (2024), directed by Giorgos Tsemberopoulos, he portrayed Manolis Chiotis, the celebrated Greek folk musician and partner of Stelios Kazantzidis, a film that ranked among the highest-grossing Greek films of all time.[22][23][24]

As a director, his debut feature My Blood (Αίμα, 2011), which he also wrote, produced, edited, and starred in, was an independent, no-budget parable based on the Oedipus myth. The film screened at festivals across the United States, United Kingdom, Indonesia, India, Croatia, Spain, and the Netherlands, winning nine international awards and securing two nominations and one win at the Hellenic Film Academy Awards.[25][26][27]

During the COVID-19 lockdown in 2021, Diamantis directed Pyramides (Pyramids) by Andreas Flourakis for the Karolos Koun Art Theatre, the first fully digital Greek theatre production made for online audiences, to critical acclaim. Critic Dr. Konstantinos Bouras, writing in To Vima, proposed a special award for his cinematography and editing.[28][29]

In 2024, Diamantis appeared in the international co-production So Long, Marianne, an eight-episode drama series about the life of Leonard Cohen, directed by Øystein Carlsen and Bronwen Hughes. He is the only Greek actor in a cast that includes Alex Wolff, Anna Torv, and Noah Taylor.[30][31][32]

Television

Diamantis Karanastasis made his television debut in 1998 in San Aderfes (Like Sisters) for the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation (ERT)[2] and went on to appear in leading roles across many productions on ANT1, Mega Channel, and Alpha TV during the following decade. Among his more prominent credits was Jungermann (2007-08) on ANT1, an adaptation of M. Karagatsis's novel, in which he co-starred with Konstantinos Markoulakis and Zeta Makripoulia.[33] Diamantis withdrew from television acting during the years of the Greek economic crisis, returning to screens in 2024 with So Long, Marianne.

Voice-over, dubbing, and productions

As a voice-over artist, Diamantis Karanastasis has worked on animated franchises such as Madagascar, Ice Age, and Star Wars: The Clone Wars, as well as video games.[34] In 2007, he founded DACOS, a post-production studio.[35] In 2022, he founded Birigogo, whose first release, The Birds by Aristophanes, topped Apple's App Store charts in Greece and is supported by the Karolos Koun Art Theatre and the Hellenic Ministry of Culture.[3][36]

In 2026, Birigogo released The Odyssey by Homer, an interactive application of Homer's epic in both English and Greek, which reached number one in the Entertainment category of the Greek App Store within days of its launch.[37][38]

Political activity

Since 2016, Diamantis Karanastasis has been a founding member of Course of Freedom (Plefsi Eleftherias), contributing to the party's strategy and communications, and representing it at international events across Europe and Brazil.[1] He is one of the complainants in the trial relating to the Mati wildfire disaster.[1]

In the June 2023 parliamentary elections, Course of Freedom entered the Hellenic Parliament for the first time, and Diamantis was elected as a Member of Parliament.[4][5] He served on the Standing Committee on Cultural and Educational Affairs,[39] the Special Permanent Committee on Research and Technology,[40] and the Special Permanent Committee on Road Safety.[41]

In November 2025, Diamantis Karanastasis resigned as Member of Parliament, in a letter addressed to the President of the Hellenic Parliament, Nikitas Kaklamanis, with which he announced that he was returning completely to his art. The resignation attracted wide media coverage across Greece.[6][7][42][43][44] He was succeeded by Elli Roussou.[45][46]

Personal life

Diamantis Karanastasis lives in Athens since 1992. He was married to actress and director Marianna Calbari, artistic director of the Karolos Koun Art Theatre, with whom he has two children; the couple divorced in 2016.[47][2] Diamantis has been in a relationship with criminal lawyer, politician, activist, and former President of the Hellenic Parliament, Zoe Konstantopoulou.[2][47]
