Daniel Druhora (born 1982) is a Romanian-born American filmmaker and educator. He wrote, directed and produced the documentary Lives, Not Grades (2021), which received a Los Angeles Area Emmy Award in 2022.[1] His other work includes Long Distance Swimmer: Sara Mardini (2023), Cloudwalkers: ISI and the Inventors of the Future (2024) and Flowing Forward, a documentary series about water security and reuse. He is a lecturer at the University of Southern California (USC) and resident filmmaker at the university's ReWater Center.

Early life and education

Druhora was born in Romania in 1982.[2] His family emigrated to the United States in the early 1990s, following the Romanian Revolution of 1989.

He studied international relations at the University of Washington and film and television production at USC.[citation needed]

Career

Druhora began his career in motion-picture development and post-production at Warner Bros., working on Gangster Squad (2013) and The Lego Movie (2014).

In 2015 and 2017, his screenplays Climbers and Marjan were named semifinalists in the Academy Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting, an annual competition administered by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.[3][4]

Druhora wrote, directed and produced Lives, Not Grades, a documentary about university students developing responses to challenges faced by displaced people on the Greek island of Lesvos. The film was broadcast by the PBS member stations KCET and PBS SoCal,[5] and received the Los Angeles Area Emmy Award for Independent Programming in 2022.[1][6][7]

He was a producer on Long Distance Swimmer: Sara Mardini (2023), which screened at Sheffield DocFest and the Raindance Film Festival, where it was nominated for best UK feature.[8]

Druhora wrote and directed Cloudwalkers: ISI and the Inventors of the Future (2024), a documentary about the USC Information Sciences Institute and its role in the development of early internet technologies, later released on Prime Video.

As resident filmmaker at USC's ReWater Center, Druhora created Flowing Forward, a documentary series about water security, reuse and infrastructure in the United States.

Teaching

In 2018, with the USC faculty members Burcin Becerik-Gerber, David Gerber and Brad Cracchiola, Druhora co-created Innovation in Engineering and Design for Global Crises, an interdisciplinary USC program focused on humanitarian challenges.[9][10]
