Constantin "Consti" Luger (born 10 November 1981 in Wiener Neustadt) is an Austrian musician, presenter and cultural studies scholar. He currently works as a senior artist and as deputy chair of the Working Group for Equal Treatment (Arbeitskreis für Gleichbehandlungsfragen, AKG) at the mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.[1][2] As a musician he performs mainly as a singer-songwriter, but has also been active in the field of classical music as an opera singer and Lied interpreter.

Early years and education

From 1995, Luger was initially active as a guitarist in several school and teenage bands. At the same time he began to write his first songs. In the following years he worked as a session musician on guitar, contributing to numerous sound recordings, and also performed as a live musician with various formations. From 2003 he studied audio engineering at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz and founded the recording studio Luger Music Productions with an associated record label. After several years as a producer of Austrian bands such as 3 Feet Smaller, No More Encore and The Gogets, and as a mastering engineer for a number of international punk-music samplers, from 2007 he decided to concentrate exclusively on his work as a musician.[3]

He completed university studies at the mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna in voice (concert major, class of Karlheinz Hanser) and in Lied and oratorio (class of David Lutz (pianist) [de]), graduating as Magister artium.[4] He has been active as a teacher ever since.[5]

Career

Luger has worked in Europe and the United States as a singer, presenter, MC and show host.[6][7] He hosted events such as the "Inked Out New Jersey Tattoo Show", "The Biggest Tattoo Show On Earth" in Las Vegas and several European shows.[8][9] In 2014 he worked on his first solo album, "Rather Dead Than Unremarkable".[10]

With several performances per year and the single "Laut für die Leisen", between 2012 and 2014 Luger appeared, together with the musical-theatre singer Maya Hakvoort, as a musical ambassador of the Harley-Davidson Charity Tour for children with muscular diseases.[11][12][13] As an opera and Lied singer he was involved in classical music, primarily during his student years, in several tours and concert trips; he was a founding member of the Opera Academy of India, and sang in Austria in a number of productions, including at the Salzburg Festival, the Vienna State Opera and the Musikverein.[3]

In 2011, Luger auditioned for the Austrian casting show Die große Chance and advanced to the quarter-finals (season 1, episode 5).[14] In the 2012 German-language dub of the film Ice Age: Continental Drift he voiced the role of the "Great Herd Animal".[15]

Luger also contributes to various sound-recording productions as an artistic adviser, and is the author of a specialist book published in April 2015 by Akademikerverlag, titled "Die Nebensonnen" – Beispiel der musikalischen und sprachlichen Analyse eines Kunstlieds (an example of the musical and linguistic analysis of an art song), based on song No. 23 of Schubert's Winterreise.[16]

Current career

With the release of his solo album "Berlin bis Wien" in 2018, Luger increasingly focused on interpreting his own songs in Austrian dialect, both as a solo artist and with his band Constantin Luger & die Kaisermelange.[17] The band gave, among other things, several performances at the Donauinselfest,[18] played in 2023 at the "Preise runter" ("prices down") rally of the Austrian Trade Union Federation (ÖGB) [19] in front of around 10,000 people at Maria-Theresien-Platz in Vienna, and also at the Anton Benya Prize ceremony in 2024 at Vienna City Hall.[20] Luger is moreover the owner of the mixing and mastering studio Pure Heritage Music and remains involved in various projects as a studio and live musician and as a producer.[21]

Political engagement

As the son of an SPÖ politician,[22] Luger began his political career together with Magdi Seifert through a candidacy for the Association of Socialist Students of Austria [de] in the Austrian Students' Union [de] elections of 2021. From a standing start, they won three seats in the university representation of the mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.[23] Luger belonged to this body for three terms.[24] For around three years he simultaneously led an SPÖ local branch in Lower Austria,[25] before eventually moving to the SPÖ in Margareten, Vienna. At the 2024 Austrian legislative election, Luger stood on a low-ranked place on the SPÖ federal list.[26] Luger campaigns publicly on democracy and diversity issues and repeatedly appears as a musician or activist at rallies, such as the "Lichtermeer" (sea of lights) in Wiener Neustadt in 2024[27] or the counter-demonstration to the Akademikerball [de] in Vienna in 2024.[28]

At the mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, Luger was initially active as an assistant to Professor Walter Werzowa at the Institute for Composition Studies, Sound and Music Production,[29] as well as a doctoral candidate at the Institute for Cultural Studies[30] and a member of the university representation.[24] After several years in these roles, in July 2024 Luger was elected deputy chair of the Working Group for Equal Treatment (AKG) at the mdw.[1][31] He currently teaches media literacy as a senior artist at the mdw's Institute for Voice and Music Theatre and is also responsible there for the Career Services for students.[2]
