The Coda Foundation (French: La Fondation Coda) is a Canadian registered charity that provides volunteer support to people receiving cancer treatment and organizes cancer-awareness, fundraising and gift-distribution activities.[1][2][3]
The organization began as a student group at Marianopolis College in 2019 and was relaunched by medical students at McGill University in 2021.[2] It subsequently became a registered charity on 27 December 2023.[1]
History
[edit]Coda was established as a student club at Marianopolis College in 2019. In 2021, Omar Toubar and six colleagues at McGill University's Campus Outaouais relaunched it as an intercollegiate organization.[2]
The organization later expanded to universities and CEGEPs in Quebec, Ontario and Alberta. CityNews reported in 2024 that it had branches at 13 academic institutions.[3] The Canada Revenue Agency subsequently registered The Coda Foundation as a charity.[1]
Activities
[edit]The foundation operates the Coda Comfort Crew at the Gatineau Cancerology Centre. Volunteers provide companionship and recreational materials, including books, games and tablet computers, to patients during chemotherapy appointments. McGill University reported in 2024 that volunteers were present at the centre five days a week. [2]
The foundation also organizes gift-distribution projects for pediatric hospital patients. In July 2024, approximately 50 volunteers assembled gift bags for more than 200 patients at CHU Sainte-Justine in Montreal.[3]
In June 2026, Coda volunteers affiliated with the University of Alberta prepared gifts for pediatric cancer patients in Edmonton as part of a “Halfway to the Holidays” event.[4][5]
Coda has held fundraising galas associated with World Cancer Day. Its February 2025 gala raised more than $17,000 for the foundation's programs, including the Coda Comfort Crew.[6]
Recognition
[edit]In 2024, Coda received a Forces AVENIR award in the Entraide, paix et justice category for university student projects.[7][2]
