Clarence "Chip" Shelton Jr., an American jazz musician and flautist.[1] who also had a career in orthodontics[2]. His recordings include Peacetime[3], Flute Bass-ics. He also released recordings in the Have Flute Will Travel series, which were recorded in Berlin and Cape May[4].
Early Life and education
[edit]Chip Shelton was born in West Virginia and relocated to Dayton, Ohio at the age of twelve[5]. He attended the University of Cincinnati and graduated from Howard University with a DDS in 1969[6]. Shelton later completed orthodontic training at Columbia University[7]. He attended Manhattan School of Music from 1988-1990 as a jazz flute major[8].
Music career
[edit]In addition to playing soprano saxophone, Shelton is a jazz flautist. He plays several instruments of the flute family not just a standard flute. Ron Carter, Stephen Scott, Lewish Nash, and Steven Kroon were among the musicians on his Flute Bass-ics album. Independent jazz reviews of Flute Bass-ics have been published[9].
In addition to creating the live recording series Have Flute Will Travel,he released Peacetime in 2006[10]
Stop 1-Berlin was recorded in Berlin in 2003 and released in 2004. Stop 2-Cape May was recorded in Cape May in 2006 and released in 2007[11]. Additionally, he released A Labor of Love[12] and "Imbued with Memories.[13] Straight-ahead jazz, contemporary jazz[14], and related genres have been identified as influences in his recorded work.
Orthodontic career
[edit]A 2006 Profile reported that Shelton had practiced orthodontics for 34 years while also maintaining his music career. He operated Accelerated Orthodontics in New York City and New Rochelle, New York.[15]
