Butterfly Vendetta is an American rock band formed in Charlottesville, Virginia in 2007.[1] The band comprises vocalists/guitarists Bianca Vee and David Dillehunt, bassist Remy Renegade, and drummer John Allietta.[2] Their distinctive sound was described as "searing alt-punk" by SPIN Magazine.[3]
History
[edit]The band originated as a side project for filmmaker and composer David Dillehunt, serving as an outlet for his instrumental rock compositions, which were initially released in November 2007 under the name Butterfly Vendetta.[4] The following month, Dillehunt was introduced to Bianca Vee of the former Richmond, Virginia rock band, *454*, and they began creating music together under that name. In July 2008, the duo officially adopted the band name Butterfly Vendetta and released their debut album, Reborn, in November 2009.[1]
Remy Renegade joined Butterfly Vendetta in 2013 and John Allietta joined in 2017.[4] The band has produced 25 music videos to date, many of which are co-directed by Vee and Dillehunt.[5] The band's music has been featured in several independent films, notably the 2008 sketch comedy, Craptastic, the 2016 psychological thriller, Oubliette, and the 2024 feature film debut from director Anna Ma, Romeo and Benvolio.[6][7]
Butterfly Vendetta was referenced in a stand-up routine by comedian Lewis Black in May 2015, during a live performance at the Paramount Theater.[8] The band was featured on the cover of the 2018 book, Regarding Charlottesville Music, by photographer and author Rich Tarbell, and in a portrait spread featuring band member, Bianca Vee.[9] Dillehunt chronicled the band in an eponymous 2018 documentary.[10][11] Butterfly Vendetta received three nominations from the 12th annual Josie Music Awards, held at The Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, TN. Dillehunt received an additional nomination as a musician.[12]
The band has released seven albums on the indie record label, Half Fast Records.[13][14] Their latest, Adjectives & Expletives, was released in December 2025.[1] Produced by Dillehunt, the album features 14 tracks that explore themes of love and loss.[15][16] Instrumentation was recorded in real-time with vocals added separately.[17][18] The lead single "U've Been Served" was featured on SiriusXM's Underground Garage by radio personality, Rodney Bingenheimer,[19][20] and received airplay on Little Steven's Coolest Songs in the World channel.[21] The song debuted at #1 on WaveRadio Boston's Strike the Box! and at #31 on the Radio Indie Alliance Top 100 Songs for the week of March 9, 2026.[22][23] The singles "Little Bit Wrong" and "Veneers" both debuted at #1 on Banks Radio Australia during their official release weeks.[24][25]

Styles and influences
[edit]Butterfly Vendetta is known for its raw performance energy and the distinctive dual-lead vocals and guitars of Vee and Dillehunt.[17] Rolling Stone UK contributor Brianna Kamienski noted how their unique style "leans into texture and attack" with "lead guitar [that] cuts through the middle with sharp, insistent licks."[1] Billboard Brasil highlighted how "the guitars alternate between striking melodies and more intense moments, creating tension without sacrificing accessibility."[2] SPIN Magazine columnist Ron Hart referred to the band as "a louder, snottier and punkier Throwing Muses" and described their sound as "searing alt-punk."[3] NOTION characterized their sound as "bold, energetic, emotionally direct, and fully committed to the rush of rock-driven storytelling."[15]
The band has consistently defined its style as indie rock and pop punk, with Dillehunt describing the sound as "Foo Fighters meets Paramore meets Alkaline Trio."[3] Stated influences include Joan Jett, Ani DiFranco, No Doubt, Alkaline Trio, The Dollyrots, Metric, Green Day, Foo Fighters, and Incubus.[3]
