Boris Valentinov Yonchev (Bulgarian: Борис Валентинов Йончев; born 27 March 2009 in Ottignies-Louvain-la-Neuve) is a Belgian-born Bulgarian racing driver who competes under Bulgarian flag. Boris competes in Prototype Cup Europe in tandem with his mentor Pavel Lefterov.[1]

Early Life

[edit]

Boris Yonchev was born in Belgium to Bulgarian parents.[2] His grandfather Georgi Petkov captained the Bulgarian national rugby team. His uncles Plamen Yonchev and Zdravko Yonchev played for the Bulgarian national baseball team. [3] [4]

Before motorsport, Boris Yonchev played competitive baseball in Belgium. He won the Belgian national championship with Brussels Kangaroos in 2020. He was selected for the Belgian U12 national team in 2021[5] and represented Belgium at the 2021 WBSC Europe U12 European Championship.[6] Between 2019 and 2020 he competed in speedcubing.[7] [8]

He speaks Bulgarian, French, English and Dutch.[9]

Karting Career

[edit]

Boris Yonchev drove a kart for the first time at age 11 after a friend invited him to an indoor karting session. This is well after the age at which most professional drivers begin karting.[10] [11]

IAME Series Benelux (2023–2024)

[edit]

Boris Yonchev made his competitive debut in the IAME Series Benelux X30 Junior class. He raced for APMotorsports and RSD Karting on Kosmic chassis. He competed in all five rounds of the 2024 championship and finished 11th of 99 drivers.[12][13]

FFSA Academy Junior Karting (2024)

[edit]

In 2024, Boris Yonchev was selected as one of 28 drivers of the 8th edition of the Championnat de France Junior Karting, run by the FFSA Academy at Le Mans.[14] The series is single-make and all drivers run Exprit chassis with Vortex OK-Junior engines on Vega tyres. Boris Yonchev raced under number 21.

Across the five rounds (La Hague, Le Mans, Mirecourt, Varennes-sur-Allier and Anneville-Ambourville) he scored 29 points and finished 13th in the season's standings. He finished at 3rd-place in the final round of the championship [15][16]. During the season he was approached by Italian management interested in moving him into single-seater and GT machinery.

Transition to GT and Endurance Racing

[edit]

After the 2024 FFSA season, Boris Yonchev was signed to test with Scuderia Arcangeli.

In 2025, Boris Yonchev made a transition from karts to racing cars.[[17]

Formula 4 testing

[edit]

Boris Yonchev tested a Tatuus F4-T014 single-seater at Autodromo dell’Umbria Magione and the Circuit de Croix-en-Ternois in France. Formula Prestige described the sessions as showing impressive pace from the young Bulgarian driver.[18]

Ferrari 488 Challenge Evo

[edit]

In addition to Formula 4 work, Boris Yonchev tested a Ferrari 488 Challenge Evo at Autodromo di Cremona.[19]

Le Mans Prototype (LMP3)

[edit]

As of 2026, Boris Yonchev took Pavel Lefterov as a mentor. They raced in Prototype Cup Europe championship. The tandem competed with the Purple Sector team in a car constructed by ADESS AG.[20] [21] The tandem's debut was in round 2 of Prototype Cup Europe at Nürburgring.[22]
