Bidyut Saha is an Indian chemist and academic known for his research in chemical physics, environmental chemistry, and chromium chemistry [1-4]. He is a faculty member at the University of Burdwan, West Bengal, India, where he has been involved in teaching and research in chemistry.

Early life and education

[edit]

Saha completed his undergraduate and postgraduate studies in chemistry at Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in 1996 and a Master of Science degree in 1998. He qualified in the National Eligibility Test (NET) in Chemical Sciences in 1998 [5].

He received his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Visva-Bharati University in 2007 under the supervision of Prof. Asim K Das. He later worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada, during 2009–2010, under the supervision of C. Orvig [5].

Academic career

[edit]

Saha began his academic career as a lecturer at Hetampur Krishna Chandra College in 2001. He joined the Department of Chemistry, University of Burdwan, in 2005 and was promoted through the academic ranks, becoming a professor in 2017.

In addition to teaching and research, he has undertaken academic service roles, including evaluation of research projects and participation in examination-related activities.

Research

[edit]

Saha’s research has focused on micellar and mixed-micellar catalysis in aqueous organic transformations, bioremediation of hexavalent chromium using natural and surfactant-assisted processes, and the synthesis of reverse-micellar-templated nanoparticles and stimuli-responsive Pickering emulsions. His work has also explored supramolecular metallogels and their potential applications in electronic, antimicrobial, and environmental contexts.

These studies are situated within the broader areas of green chemistry and sustainable materials.

Editorial and professional activities

[edit]

Saha serves as an associate editor of the journal Chemistry Africa. He has also held editorial board positions with several international peer-reviewed journals, including Research on Chemical Intermediates [6], Vietnam Journal of Chemistry [7], and Combinatorial Chemistry & High Throughput Screening [8].

Awards and honors

[edit]

Saha was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC) in 2024. He received the BOYSCAST Fellowship from the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, during 2008–2009. In 2019, he received a Publons Global Peer Review Award.

He has been listed in a global database of the world’s most-cited researchers compiled by Stanford University and Elsevier between 2023 and 2025 [9]. In 2025, he received the Springer Nature Editor of Distinction Award.

Publications

[edit]

Saha has published extensively in peer-reviewed international chemistry journals. His research articles have appeared in journals such as Langmuir, Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research, Journal of Molecular Liquids, RSC Advances, and New Journal of Chemistry [10]. His research has been included in citation-based analyses of scientific output compiled by independent bibliometric databases [10].
