The Bamougoum museum, also known as Bamougoum patrimonial case or Bamougoum calabashes museum is an ethnographic community museum located in the Bafoussam III sub-division, in the Western region of Cameroon.[1]

History

The museum was inaugurated in 2014.[1]

Mission

The museum project permits to document the Bamougoum heritage so it can be transmitted to the future generation.[2]

Acquisitions, implementation and beginning

The museum contains special traditional objects such as sculptures, traditional dresses, musical instruments and ritual artefacts which testify the rich cultural wealth.[3]

Administration

The Bamougoum museum, attached to the kingdom is administrated by the chief Moumbé Fotso. It is chaired by Roger Tafam, mayor of the city of Bafoussam.[3]

Fundings

The source of income of the Bamougoum museum principally comes from cultural valuation initiatives carried out by the association sometimes backed up by international subsidies, private patrons and decentralized cooperation.

Architecture and space management

The museum is constructed in the form of a calabash which is a particular element in the Bamougoum culture.

The building contains carved decorations and symbolic signs inspired by the bamileke arts, showing the social status and the believes associated to the kingdom.[2][4]

The Bamougoum museum has a variety of attractions, notably the Nkang's biennial ceremonies, great moment of the local tradition.

The Bamougoum museum presents a permanent original exhibition dedicated to calabashes, symbolic objects for practical and cultural functions.[2]

Temporary Exhibition

Some objects of the museum were displayed during international events.[2]
