August 27 Stadium, also known as Damaturu Township Stadium, is a multi-purpose stadium in Damaturu, Yobe State, Nigeria. It is the home venue for the Yobe Desert Stars football club and has a capacity of 6,000 spectators.^[1] ^[2]

History

The stadium has served as a central sports venue in Damaturu for many years. Its name commemorates a significant date in the state's history. The venue has experienced periods of insecurity due to the Boko Haram insurgency. During the first major attack in Damaturu in 2009, residents at the stadium heard explosions and saw smoke rising from the direction of Maiduguri Road, marking the beginning of the conflict in the state. In December 2019, a military reconnaissance vehicle stationed near the stadium experienced a weapons system malfunction, causing a fire and explosions that led to panic among residents. Authorities confirmed the incident was an accident, not an attack.^[3] ^[4]

Recent Renovations

In 2025, the Yobe State government, under Governor Mai Mala Buni, undertook a major refurbishment of the stadium. The project aimed to transform it into a modern facility capable of hosting continental and inter-continental events. Upgrades included the construction of a new VIP stand, roofing of the popular side, a presidential lounge, an indoor sports complex, and an iconic perimeter fence and gate. The renovations were praised by the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), who awarded Governor Buni for his commitment to sports development.^[5] ^[6]

Use

The stadium is primarily used for football matches and has hosted the final of the Yobe State Governor's Cup football competition. It is also used for community gatherings and has served as a location for military security operations during the insurgency.^[7]
