Arun Kumar Jugran is an Indian plant biologist and conservation geneticist. He serves as a Scientist-E at the Garhwal Regional Centre of the G. B. Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment (NIHE) in Srinagar Garhwal, Uttarakhand, India.[1] His research focuses on plant biotechnology, high-altitude conservation genetics, biodiversity genomics, and the Himalayan bioeconomy.[2]
Education and career
[edit]Jugran completed his Master of Science in biotechnology at H.N.B. Garhwal University. He conducted his doctoral research in biotechnology at the G. B. Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment (Kosi-Katarmal, Almora), earning his Ph.D. from Kumaun University.[2] He subsequently joined the G. B. Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment, advancing to Senior Scientist (Scientist-E) at its Garhwal Regional Centre in Srinagar Garhwal.[2][1]
Research
[edit]Jugran's research addresses conservation genomics, phytochemistry, microbial biofertilizers, and sustainable mountain agriculture.
Crop diversity and biofertilizers
[edit]Jugran has investigated the genetic and biochemical diversity of the Himalayan common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris). His team evaluated 152 accessions across the Western Himalaya, identifying significant variation in protein, antioxidant, and methionine levels to support high-altitude crop improvement.[3] In farmer-managed trials in Uttarakhand, he demonstrated that seed inoculation with indigenous Pseudomonas strains enhanced common bean yields by 5–25% while improving nutritional metrics.[4]
Himalayan flora and micropropagation
[edit]His research encompasses high-altitude Himalayan flora across the genera Swertia, Rhododendron, Malaxis, and Valeriana jatamansi. In 2024, Jugran co-authored a study analyzing the morphological, phytochemical, and genetic diversity, as well as ecological niche distribution, of Allium stracheyi (locally known as jambu).[5]
Along with researchers at the institute, he developed a rapid in vitro micropropagation protocol for the conservation and mass multiplication of A. stracheyi, utilizing bulb explants to enable year-round cultivation for commercial and medicinal applications.[6] The procedure is the subject of an Indian patent application.[7]
Academic and professional service
[edit]- Indian National Young Academy of Science (INYAS): Jugran was selected as a member of INYAS in 2022 for a five-year term.[2] He was subsequently elected to the INYAS Core Committee for the 2025–2026 term as the Subject Representative for Biological Sciences.
- Editorial roles: Jugran joined the editorial board of Scientific Reports in 2025. He has also served as an academic editor for PLOS ONE[8] and as a guest editor for thematic collections on plant secondary metabolites.
Outreach and community development
[edit]- In Rudraprayag district, Jugran served as the scientist-in-charge of a two-day livelihood training workshop held in Gadiyalka village, instructing local farmers and artisans in beekeeping, value addition to forest produce (juices, jams, and jellies), and sustainable harvesting of regional medicinal flora.[9]
- In September 2026, he participated as a domain specialist in the Vigyan Gram RuSETUP workshop in Vikasnagar, conducting sessions on watershed management and water conservation for more than 180 students.[1]
- He coordinated biodiversity awareness and tree plantation activities in Triyuginarayan village organized by the Garhwal Regional Centre in connection with the Askot-Arakot campaign.[10]
Awards and honors
[edit]- Young Scientist Award, Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India (2013)[2]
- Young Scientist Award, Uttarakhand State Council for Science and Technology (UCOST) (2012)[2]
- Senior Research Fellowship (SRF), Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (2012)[2]
