Anna Kafetsi (Athens, 27 October 1955 - Athens, 21 May 2026) was a Greek art historian, academic and exhibition curator, who served as the director of the National Museum of Contemporary Art since its founding in 2000 until her dismissal in 2014.[1]
Biography
[edit]She was born in Athens on 27 October 1955. She studied archaeology and art history at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and continued her studies on a postgraduate and doctoral level in Aesthetics and Art History a the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne.[1][2] After returning to Greece, she worked at the National Gallery of Athens as a curator of the 20th century collections. She taught History of Art and Aesthetics at Panteion University for one year. [3] In 1995 she participated in the task force established with the purpose of developing a national policy for the visual arts in Greece, which proposed the establishment of the National Museum of Contemporary Art - EMST in Athens, Greece. EMST was officially founded in December 1997 and Anna Kafetsi was appointed its director three years later in 2000.[4]
Work at EMST
[edit]EMST inaugurated its activities in 2000 with the exhibition Synopsis 1. Communications curated by Kafetsi at the former Fix Brewery, which Has been granted by the Ministry of Culture as the museum's temporary home. Two more exhibitions in the same series followed: Theologies and Testimonies at the FIX Building and the Athens Concert Hall. These where preceded by the exhibition Yannis Tsarouchis. Between East and West at the same location.[5][6]
During her 14 year tenure as EMST's director, the museum developed its permanent collection, organized exhibitions by Greek and international artists during the museum's nomadic years and its temporary residence at the Athens Conservatoire (2008-2015), and established its museological and artistic identity.[5][7]
She was removed from her position by the Ministry of Culture in 2014 after a period of disagreement with the museum's board and her refusal to resign.[7]
Following her departure from EMST, Kafetsi continued her career as the director of AnnexM, the contemporary art centre of the Athens Concert Hall, a position she held from 2016 until her death in 2026.
Personal life
[edit]She was the partner of writer and literary critic Andreas Belezinis.
She died on 21 May 2026.

Kami, Young-hae Chang Heavy Industries, Yang Fudong, Gulsun Karamustafa, Μaaria Wirkkala, Carlos Garaicoa, Dilek Winchester, Andrea Bowers, Georgios Xenos.
