Ángel Jhiovani Sigala Solorzano (born June 1, 1996) is a Mexican actor, singer, and dancer. He is known for portraying Mateo Diaz in the 2023 Broadway musical New York, New York[1]. He also performed at the 76th Tony Awards[2] and was featured on the musical's original cast recording.

Early life

Ángel Jhiovani Sigala Solorzano was born in Coacalco de Berriozábal, State of Mexico, and grew up in Coyotepec, State of Mexico, around an hour and 45 minutes outside of Mexico City to Mexican parents. Sigala began dancing Mexican folklore at a young age as his father was a professional dancer. He emigrated to Philadelphia, United States, as a child. During high school, he was selected at the Greater Philadelphia Area Cappies Awards all 4 years of high school. Sigala also attended summer theatre camp at MacGuffin Theatre & Film Company in Philadelphia.[3]

Sigala was a Mexican folklore dancer at the Mexican Independence Day Festival in 2014, 2016, and 2018 at the Mexican Cultural Center of Philadelphia. He also performed for Pope Francis during his 2015 papal visit in Philadelphia.[3][4][5][6]

Sigala graduated from Temple University's School of Theater, Film, and Media Arts in 2018 with a Bachelor of Arts in musical theatre and acting.[3][7]

Career

In 2017, Sigala played Miguel in InterAct Theatre Company's How to Use a Knife by Will Snider.[8] Later that year, Sigala was a backup dancer for Lila Downs, at the Miller Theatre in Philadelphia.[citation needed]

In the beginning of 2022, Sigala made his Arden Theatre Company debut as Pablo in A Streetcar Named Desire. In the fall of 2022, he starred as Epifanio in the bilingual play, Mushroom, at People's Light.[9] Angel was also a part of the workshop for Mushroom in 2021. In the winter of 2022, Sigala performed in Alice in Wonderland: A Musical Panto at People's Light.[10][11] Sigala was the swing for the roles of Tweedle and Caterpillar as well as an ensemble member. In December 2022, Angel signed with the Daniel Hoff Agency.[citation needed]

Broadway debut, Tony Awards, and original Broadway cast recording

In April 2023, Sigala made his Broadway debut as Mateo Diaz in New York, New York: A New Musical. Sigala performed live at the 76th Tony Awards.[12] Jesse Green and Maya Phillips from the The New York Times said Sigala should have been nominated at the ceremony.[13] The original cast recording for New York, New York's was released on June 9, 2023. He is featured on "Gold", "San Juan Supper Club", "New York Concerto", and "Music, Money, Love".[citation needed]

In September 2023, Sigala performed in Aquí y Allá (Here and There), a concert to honor Hispanic Heritage Month at the third annual Curtain Up! Broadway Festival presented by The Broadway League, Playbill, and the Times Square Alliance.[14] Sigala also starred as Woof in Hair for Two River Theater's 30th season in Red Bank, New Jersey.[15][16]

In October 2023, Sigala received the Hispanic Organization of Latin Actors (HOLA) Emerging Artist Award at the 22nd HOLA Awards Gala in New York City.[17] The next year, he was nominated for a Barrymore Award for his performance as Michael and others in tick, tick... BOOM!.[18] In 2025, Angel starred as Daniel in the U.S. premiere of Stef Smith's Nora: A Doll's House at Hedgerow Theatre Company in Rose Valley, Pennsylvania.[19]

In May 2026, Sigala was a choreographer and an award presenter for the 2026 Philadelphia Independence Awards.[20]
