From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alina Wheeler (October 14, 1948 – December 5, 2023) was an American brand consultant and author. She is best known for her book Designing Brand Identity, a guide to creating and managing brands first published in 2003. The book has appeared in six editions and been translated into eleven languages.[1][2]

Early life and education

[edit]

Wheeler was born on October 14, 1948, in South Orange, New Jersey.[1] She graduated from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia in 1970, and in 2012 received the university's Silver Star award for outstanding alumni.[3]

Career

[edit]

In 1980, Wheeler co-founded the Philadelphia graphic design firm Katz Wheeler with designer Joel Katz; it operated until 1993.[3][4] She subsequently worked as an independent brand consultant advising organizations on brand strategy and identity.[2]

Wheeler was active in AIGA, the professional association for design. She was a founding board member of its Philadelphia chapter and served as its president, and was later named an AIGA Fellow.[1][3] She also served on the advisory council for The Dictionary of Brand.[5] Wheeler was quoted as an expert on branding and logo design in business media such as Entrepreneur.[6]

Writing

[edit]

Wheeler published Designing Brand Identity in 2003. Reviewing it in Communication Arts, DK Holland praised the book's accessible, highly visual format and described it as "a valued reference book for all members of the branding team".[7] A brief review in the academic journal Design Issues called it a suitable big-picture reference for design students and professionals.[8] The book has since appeared in six editions and been translated into eleven languages.[9][2]

In 2011 she co-authored Brand Atlas: Branding Intelligence Made Visible with Joel Katz.[10]

The sixth edition of Designing Brand Identity, published in February 2024, was co-authored with Rob Meyerson; Wheeler reviewed the final proofs before her death.[3][9]

Death

[edit]

Wheeler died at her home in Philadelphia on December 5, 2023, at the age of 75.[1][3] Tributes were published in design trade outlets including Print.[1] After her death, AIGA Philadelphia renamed its student scholarship fund the Alina Wheeler Memorial Scholarship in her honor.[11]
