David Max Benoliel (February 5, 1934 – January 3, 2025) was a French-British lawyer and writer.
Biography
[edit]Benoliel's was born in 1934 to a Gibraltese Jewish father and a Spanish Catholic mother. He was born as a British citizen under his father in Casablanca under the French protectorate in Morocco.[1]
He graduated with a degree in law in 1956 in Casablance, and registered with the bar association in Marrakesh. He moved to the town of Agadir, where he survived the 1960 Agadir earthquake. He fled to France following the domestication of the Judicial system under Moroccan law. He did so in 1965, but was forbidden to access the French bar since was not a French national. He gained nationality in 1971 and was admitted to the bar in Aix-en-Provence in June 1973. He retained his British citizen, becoming a dual citizen.[1]
Although Benoliel wrote casually since his youth, he had not finished his first novel, originally titled A Marriage of Convenience, until the 1990s, close to his retirement from law. He left formal law practice in 2001, retaining honorary lawyer status, and moved to Vaux-sur-Mer with his wife in 2004 where he continued to write.[2] In 2012, he won the Royan Beach Novel Prize for his book, Le jeu des assassins.[3]
His wife gave birth to a daughter, Marie, in 1991. She is an actress, comedian, and online personality known online as Marie s'infiltre.[4]
