Cherlato is an American artisanal gelato brand co-founded by American singer and actress Cher and New Zealand gelato maker Gianpaolo "Giapo" Grazioli. The brand launched in Los Angeles in July 2023 following several years of product development and initially operated through a fleet of mobile gelato trucks before expanding to pop-up locations and special events.[1]
Background
[edit]Cher first met New Zealand gelato maker Giapo Grazioli during a visit to Auckland in 2018. After tasting Grazioli's gelato, the pair began discussing the possibility of creating a gelato brand together. Over the next five years, they collaborated on developing recipes, branding, and the overall concept for what would become Cherlato.[1]
Cher was closely involved in the development of the brand, contributing to the selection of flavors, packaging, and visual identity. Grazioli described the partnership as combining his experience in artisanal gelato with Cher's creative direction and aesthetic vision.[1][2]
History
[edit]Cherlato officially launched on July 25, 2023, with brightly colored branded gelato trucks serving customers in Los Angeles. Following its Los Angeles debut, Cherlato expanded through pop-up events in New York City[3] and Miami.[4]
Products
[edit]Cherlato specializes in artisanal gelato made with seasonal ingredients sourced primarily from California farms. The company regularly introduces limited-edition flavors alongside a rotating menu of signature offerings.[5]
Reception
[edit]Cherlato received generally positive reviews following its launch.
Reviewing the launch for Yahoo Entertainment, Raechal Shewfelt described the gelato as "fantastic" and praised its creamy texture, presentation, and inventive flavors, highlighting Stracciatella Giapo's Way and Breakfast at Cher's Coffee & Donuts among her favorites.[6]
Writing for The Spinoff, Stewart Sowman-Lund praised the creativity of the flavors, particularly SoCal's Coldest Avocado on Toast, calling it an unexpectedly successful combination, while also complimenting the quality of the gelato itself.[7]
Brant Cox from The Infatuation rated the gelato 7.4/10, praising its "soft, silkiness" and naming Cher's Mom's Cheesecake as his favorite flavor, while noting that although it was "not the best in town by any means," it was still an enjoyable dessert experience.[8]
