Check24 is a German online price comparison company based in Munich. It offers comparisons of insurance policies, energy tariffs, financial products, internet and mobile plans. The business began in 1999 as the insurance comparison and later expanded into multiple segments.[1][2]
History
[edit]Check24 originated as einsurance, a company founded in Munich in 1999 by Henrich Blase and colleagues.[1] The business received investment from VC firm Accel in 2007.[3]
Check24 website launched in 2008, combining einsurance.de with the financial comparison website moneyworld.de and the energy comparison tarifvergleich.de. At launch, it covered insurance, financial products, energy and telecommunications tariffs.[4] Travel bookings were added later.[1]
By the end of 2015, Check24’s motor insurance portfolio covered 1.05 million vehicles.[5] Manager Magazin described Check24 as Germany’s leading comparison portal in 2016.[6]
In 2020, Check24 entered the Spanish market and opened its first office outside Germany in Madrid.[2]
According to Handelsblatt, Check24 was Germany's leading comparison portal again in 2025.[7]
Services and business model
[edit]Customers can use the platform to take out insurance, switch energy or telecommunications providers, and book hotels or flights.[8] Check24 earns commissions from providers when customers conclude contracts through the platform.[9][10]
In insurance, it acts as an insurance broker, advising customers and arranging policies.[11] Its travel services include package holidays, flights, hotels and rental cars, including the car rental broker Aurumcars.[2]
Check24 also offers free solution for submitting German tax returns; Check24 Steuer. It covers employment income, pensions, investments, rental income, as well as income from self-employment and business activities.[12]
Marketing
[edit]During UEFA Euro 2024, Check24 promoted its app by giving away Germany-themed football shirts made by Puma. Since the start of the event, the company had increased distribution to total of 5 million shirts.[13]
Legal and regulatory issues
[edit]Following a Bundeskartellamt investigation, Check24 agreed in February 2026 to stop preventing energy suppliers from offering lower prices elsewhere.[14]
