Calcinus hazletti, commonly known as the Hawaiian whitefoot hermit, is a species of hermit crab in the family Diogenidae.[1] It was described by Janet Haig and Patsy A. McLaughlin in 1984 from Hawaiian material; the holotype was collected at Kahe Point, Oahu, from the base of Pocillopora meandrina at a depth of 5 m.[2]
Description
[edit]Haig and McLaughlin described the species as having dark orange-red chelipeds with white fingers and white-tipped spines, and dark orange-red walking legs with white dactyls except for a small orange-red area near the base.[2]
Distribution and habitat
[edit]Calcinus hazletti was originally described from the Hawaiian Islands and was later recorded from Japanese waters, including the Ogasawara Islands and Kushimoto on the Kii Peninsula.[3][4] A study at Hōnaunau Bay on the island of Hawaii found the species in subtidal coral habitat, primarily below 2 m depth, and reported that individuals occurred predominantly on the cauliflower coral Pocillopora meandrina.[5]
