Brett Chenoweth is an Australian business executive and company director. He has served as chairman of CDC Data Centres (formerly Canberra Data Centres) since 2016 and chairman of Tabcorp since 2024.
He has held chief executive officer, chairman and board positions in the media, telecommunications, digital infrastructure and technology sectors.
Early life and education
[edit]Chenoweth was born and raised in Queensland.[1] He holds Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Economics degrees from the University of Queensland.[2]
Career
[edit]Early career
[edit]Chenoweth held senior roles in the media, technology and telecommunications sectors, including positions at Village Roadshow Pictures, ecorp Ltd and ninemsn Pty. He later joined Telecom New Zealand Group, where he served as head of mergers and acquisitions and head of strategy.[2] Between 2001 and 2005 he served in several executive roles at Telecom New Zealand, including Head of Group Strategy and Mergers & Acquisitions and Head of the Australian Consumer Group, and served as a director of several Telecom Group subsidiary companies.[3][4]
Chenoweth subsequently co-founded the Australian direct investment firm Cesura Partners[2] before becoming a managing director and head of Asia-Pacific of the New York-based merchant banking firm The Silverfern Group.[2][4]
In 2006, Chenoweth also founded Gizmo, an Australian technology support company, and served as its chief executive officer. The company initially launched in Sydney before expanding nationally, providing in-home and telephone technical support for consumers.[5][6]
APN News & Media
[edit]In October 2010, Chenoweth was appointed chief executive officer of APN News & Media, succeeding Brendan Hopkins. He assumed the role on 1 January 2011 after leaving The Silverfern Group.[3][4]
As chief executive of APN News & Media, Chenoweth oversaw APN News & Media's operations across publishing, radio, outdoor advertising and digital media in Australia and New Zealand.[7] During his tenure as chief executive of APN News & Media, Chenoweth proposed a strategic restructuring to reduce the company's reliance on print publishing and expand its radio, outdoor advertising and digital media businesses.[8] Although he resigned in February 2013 before the plan was implemented, elements of the strategy—including the separation of APN's New Zealand assets—were later adopted.[8][9]
Board and chairman roles
[edit]In 2014, Chenoweth joined an investor consortium comprising Adrian MacKenzie, Charbel Nader, Tim Anderson and Paul Wiegard that acquired the film distribution company Madman Entertainment from Funtastic. Following the acquisition, he became chairman of the company[10][11]
In 2015, Chenoweth co-founded the investment firm Bombora Group with Mike Hill.[12] In the same year, he was appointed to the board of Surfing Australia. At the time, he also served as the advisory board of H.R.L. Morrison & Co., and as managing director of HJB Limited.[13]
In January 2016, Chenoweth was appointed an independent non-executive director of eftpos Payments Australia.[14]
In October, Chenoweth was appointed chairman of Canberra Data Centres following its acquisition by Infratil and Commonwealth Super Corporation.[15] Since 2016, Chenoweth has served as chairman of CDC Data Centres, which operates data centres in Australia and New Zealand.[16][17]
In 2017, Chenoweth became chairman of QUT Creative Enterprise Australia (CEA), an accelerator and investment initiative supporting startups in the creative industries. At the time, he also served as chairman of Yellow Pages Group.[1]
In 2022, Chenoweth joined the board of Tabcorp as a non-executive director, where he chaired the Risk, Compliance and Sustainability Committee.[18]
In September 2024, he was appointed chairman of Tabcorp, succeeding Bruce Akhurst. At the time of his appointment, Chenoweth was chairman of Adairs, Canberra Data Centres and RetireAustralia, and served as a non-executive director of EVT Limited and One New Zealand Group (formerly Vodafone New Zealand).[18][19] As chairman of Tabcorp, Chenoweth served during a period in which the company implemented a corporate transformation strategy under chief executive Gillon McLachlan. At the company's 2025 annual general meeting, shareholders re-elected Chenoweth as chairman and approved the board's proposed resolutions.[20][21]
In March 2026, Chenoweth became an adviser to the Global Talent Fund, a venture capital fund established by Investible and EMT Partners to invest in celebrity-backed consumer brands.[22]
