From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Architainment is a portmanteau of the words architecture and entertainment. It is generally associated lighting or LEDs, and describes a process in which an inanimate material object as distinct from a living sentient being is apposed an entertaining element via light, media, kinetic or other medium; thus giving it a dual purpose.

Recent technologies and art field such as colour changing LED lighting or motion detection or kinetic art have increased the visibility and versatility potential and brought this new discipline into life.

The Origin of the Architainment Concept In the 1990s, American cultural critic Norman Klein coined the term Architainment to describe the fusion of themed environments (such as Coney Island or Disneyland) with everyday spaces. For Klein, “Architainment creates a ‘staged space’: [it is] ‘Any street or interior where the viewer can imagine themselves as the central character in an imaginary story’” (Burris 93) (extract of "Architainment, nuevos cruces entre arquitectura y espectáculos" by Luciana Suppicich and Sophya Acosta).

The Emergence of a New Form of Lighting Currently, we cannot yet definitively determine whether Architainment can be considered an artistic expression within the performing arts or a discipline that serves architecture; however, we will attempt to conceptually approach a territory that has become increasingly revolutionary and relevant in the lighting industry. As already mentioned, the emergence of Architainment is recent. The rise of control systems, the growing ability to create networked systems, and technological advancements in the design and implementation of lighting resources for both the architectural and entertainment industries, coupled with a new paradigm of image generation, are leading to the emergence of hybrid spaces where resources from different disciplines are combined to create new experiences. We are currently witnessing the beginning of a new way of connecting Architectural Lighting and Entertainment Lighting.(extract of "Architainment, nuevos cruces entre arquitectura y espectáculos" by Luciana Suppicich and Sophya Acosta).

Some examples of architainment:

The fully automated Sky Symphony installation of 1001 Kinetic LED Winches in Genting Highlands. The free-to-public performance showcases an orchestra of lighting, kinetic, music and motion graphics programming.[1][2] The installation's permanent access to a public audience allowed companies such as Netflix and DC Entertainment to conduct large scale marketing campaigns using the display.[3][4]

The Empire state building has recently been fitted with colour changing LED fixtures that change the building lighting at will. During Festive season the lighting is themed to match the colour scheme and sometimes synchronized to music played on local radio.

Another example can be seen at the Sydney opera house where dynamic lighting has given the opera house a new life.[5]

Architainment can be seen in Finland in an installation called Valokaivo,[6] where light and motion sensors are serving a dual purpose.
