Anthony Gozie Anwukah (born 22 April 1951) is a Nigerian professor of education and former Minister of State for Education of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, serving from November 2015 to 2019 under President Muhammadu Buhari.
Education
[edit]Anwukah was born on 22 April 1951 in Egbuoma Town, Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State. He studied English Language and Literature at Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone from 1970 to 1974, graduating with a Second Class Upper Honours degree.[1] He obtained a master's degree in Educational Administration and Planning from the University of Portland, Oregon, US in 1975 and a Doctorate degree in General Curriculum, System Analysis and Social Studies from the University of Washington, Seattle, US in 1977.[2]
Career
[edit]Anwukah began his academic career as a Teaching Assistant at the University of Washington from 1976 to 1977, before returning to Nigeria. He served as Senior Lecturer and Reader at the University of Maiduguri from 1983 to 1989, during which time he was also a Curriculum Resource Person and Consultant to the Nigerian National Teachers Institute in Kaduna.[2]
He was appointed Professor of Education at Imo State University (now Abia State University, Uturu) in 1989 and served as Dean of the Faculty of Education at Imo State University, Owerri from 1993 to 1994.[3] He subsequently served as Vice Chancellor of Imo State University for five years during the administration of Governor Achike Udenwa from 2000 to 2005.[2]
Following his tenure as Vice Chancellor, Anwukah served as Secretary to the Imo State Government under Governor Rochas Okorocha.[4] In November 2015, President Muhammadu Buhari appointed him Minister of State for Education, a position he held until 2019.[3]
Publications
[edit]Anwukah has over 36 published articles in internationally recognised journals. His books include Curriculum Development for Responsive Education: Theoretical Foundation published by Bethany Books, Stockholm, Sweden, and writing materials for the National Teachers Institute course series in Teachers Grade II Education used across Nigeria.[1]
