Zity is an electric car-sharing service operated by Mobilize, a mobility brand of the Renault Group. Founded in 2017 by Renault and the Spanish infrastructure company Ferrovial, the service enables users to rent electric vehicles for short, one-way trips through a mobile application.
Initially launched in Madrid, Zity later expanded to several European cities, including Paris, Lyon and Milan.
History
[edit]Zity was launched in Madrid in December 2017 as a joint venture between Renault and Ferrovial. The service was created to provide free-floating electric car sharing in urban areas, allowing users to locate, reserve and rent vehicles through a smartphone application. The fleet initially consisted of Renault Zoe electric cars.
In May 2020, Zity expanded to Paris with a fleet of approximately 500 Renault Zoe vehicles. In 2021, Dacia Spring models were added to the Paris fleet, increasing the number of available electric vehicles.
Following the easing of COVID-19 restrictions in Europe, Renault reported a significant increase in demand for Zity. By mid-2021, the service had around 435,000 registered users in Madrid and Paris. Renault also announced plans to expand Zity to another major European city as part of its Mobilize mobility strategy, while considering the introduction of additional mobility services in Morocco, Russia, Turkey and China. Mobilize was expected to become a significant contributor to Renault Group's long-term revenue.[1]
Withdrawal from Paris
[edit]On 11 January 2024, Mobilize announced that Zity would cease operations in Paris on 15 January 2024. According to the company, the decision was prompted by repeated damage to vehicles in the fleet, which reduced vehicle availability and negatively affected the quality of the service despite efforts to improve operations.
During its three years of operation in Paris, the service accumulated more than 100,000 users, who collectively travelled over 8 million kilometres. Mobilize stated that Zity would continue operating in Lyon, Madrid and Milan following its withdrawal from the French capital.[2]
