Wikipedia:Good article reassessment/1971 Iraq poison grain disaster/1
GAR nomination: 1971 Iraq poison grain disaster
[edit]This article fails GA criterion 3a (broadness of coverage). It never explains the basic agricultural rationale behind the events it describes, leaving readers unable to follow the causal logic.
- Purpose of mercury seed treatment is unexplained.
The Context section states only that "Mercury was found to be an effective fungicide in the early 1900s." It does not explain that this treatment was applied specifically to seed grain to protect it from fungal spoilage during shipping/storage prior to planting — not to the crop that would eventually be harvested. Without this, readers cannot understand why seed grain in particular was treated with a toxin, or why such a practice existed.
- Fate of mercury after planting is unaddressed.
The article never states whether wheat/barley grown from properly planted treated seed would itself have been safe to eat. This is the central premise that makes the disaster comprehensible: the poisoning occurred specifically because farmers consumed the raw seed grain rather than planting it and eating the resulting harvest. Without addressing what would have happened under intended use, the article leaves this foundational question open.
These are coverage gaps, not merely prose-clarity issues, and I believe they warrant reassessment.流山隆一 (talk) 01:30, 9 August 2026 (UTC)
