Article of the month

James F. Woodward (1941 – August 9, 2025) was an American physicist who was professor emeritus of history and an adjunct professor of physics at California State University, Fullerton. He is best known for a physics hypothesis that he proposed in 1990, later expanded, that predicts several physical effects that he refers to as 'Mach effects'. Woodward claimed the effect could be used as a reactionless drive for space travel.

Test inflation of PAGEOS, a balloon satellite

The Passive Geodetic Earth Orbiting Satellite (PAGEOS) was the first dedicated geodetic surveying satellite. PAGEOS was the culmination of a series of balloon satellites that started in 1960 with Project Echo. These satellites were commissioned following the launch of Sputnik 1, as the United States was eager to catch up to the Soviet Union during the Space Race. Construction of PAGEOS was undertaken by the Gilmore Schjeldahl#Schjeldahl Company, founded by the same man who invented the sickness bag. This image shows a test inflation of the 30 m (100 ft), 57 kg (125 lb) satellite performed on 5 August, 1965.
