Verity is a 2026 animated horror web series created by the YouTuber ThatMob. The series and media related to it became the subject of an internet meme popular among Generation Alpha.
Media
[edit]The Verity YouTube series was created by ThatMob, one of several YouTubers who create machinima horror films set within the video game Minecraft. In the first episode, released in May 2026, ThatMob's self-insert protagonist meets Verity, an in-game virtual assistant who resembles a yellow smiley face.[1] Verity, voiced by YouTuber JustWhispy, becomes increasingly invasive and unsettling over time and begins reciting details about ThatMob's personal life. He eventually transforms into a hostile humanoid monster.[2]
Later, another YouTuber named Horror Skunx created a song and accompanying music video called "It's Me, It's Verity" based on the series.[1] Multiple Minecraft mods have been created to bring Verity into the game. Three of these mods have been officially supported by ThatMob.[3]
Popularity and memes
[edit]The original series and Horror Skunx's music video each received over twenty million views,[1] and several Minecraft mods received millions of downloads.[3] As part of an internet meme that gained popularity among Generation Alpha, yellow smiley faces and words ending with the suffix -ity trigger associations with Verity and the Verity song.[1][4]
Coincidentally, an unrelated thriller film called Verity began promotion around the same time, prompting memes from fans. A September 2026 short-form promotional video for the film referenced Horror Skunx's lyrics.[4][5]
Analysis
[edit]Natasha Hinde of HuffPost classified Verity as a form of brain rot akin to Ballerina Cappuccina.[4] Owen Carry of USA Today said that Verity memes "could be the new '6-7'", and attributed the series's popularity to a trend of "corporate horror", a genre comprising the Backrooms and the YouTube series Skibidi Toilet, among young people of the time. He also connected the series to fears surrounding AI, comparing Verity to the shoggoth, a monster often depicted hiding behind a smiley face as a metaphor for AI.[1] Nyla Gilbert of Den of Geek attributed Verity's popularity to a trend towards more independent and interactive media, which Minecraft as a medium easily facilitates. She compared the character of Verity to Nikki Freeman from the 2025 horror film Obsession.[2]
