Tormod is a masculine Norwegian[1] and Scottish Gaelic given name.[2] The Norwegian name (with the variant Thormod)[1] is derived from Old Norse Þórmóðr,[1] composed of the elements Þorr, the name of the Norse god of thunder, and móðr, meaning "mind", "courage".[3] The Gaelic name is derived either from Þórmóðr[4] or from Þormundr,[5] in which the second element is mundr, "protection". It is customarily anglicised as Norman, an etymologically unrelated name.[6]
In Ireland, the Old Norse name gave rise to the name Tormach, which survives in the surname Tormey (from Irish Ó Tormaigh, "descendant of Tormach").[7]
