Users who tag this on their User page are not thereby registered in Category:WikiProject Japan participants. Actually, you must use {{User WP Japan}} to be placed in that category.

I opened discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Japan#Membership Roll? whether to modify code (see below) so that everyone who uses this template do get thrown in this category. But I was reminded that people who are still active and expressly want to show participation have signed up at Wikipedia:WikiProject Japan/Participants, so I'm not sure anymore.

Anyway, I believe the code change required is simply to edit this template with the following addition:
