Official Flag

[edit]

I updated the flag to Union flag. The Ulster banner has not been official flag of NI since 1972. This is an encyclopaedia, right? Encyclopaedia are supposed to have the facts correct. Fact: The Union flag is the only official flag of NI. See Flag of Northern Ireland for more detail. Snappy56 17:45, 21 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

There is no Flag of Northern Ireland - therefore no flag should be used. To use one is WP:OR.--Vintagekits 17:46, 21 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Snappy, neither the Union Jack or the Ulster Banner should be used as none of the Flag of Northern Ireland. Either a blank white flag or no flag at all should be used.--Vintagekits 19:17, 22 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

There should be two different templates for this. On some pages such as football, golf or Commonwealth Games bios, the flag's usage is correct - and this is generally agreed with most people involved in the flag debate. Otherwise it is (arguably) incorrect to use it. On article's like The Folks on the Hill, there shouldn't even be a flag anyway, so the template should be removed completely. I agree with what has already been said, but I think that N Ireland needs a unique image, seeing as it has no official flag of its own. Therefore I added the N Ireland territory image.
If anyone has a problem with that, please discuss it here. I have no intention of edit warring with anyone, I imagine its boring and tedious, and I actually want to resolve this issue once and for all. Fennessy 14:32, 16 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Fennessy, I totaly agree about the Ulster Banner but this template is used in many sports articles that do you the UB, such as international football and the Commonwealth Games. For that reason this template cannot be changed, until such time as the sports templates are sorted to not use this template. So edit warring on this template is pointless, and not the way to resolve this issue.--padraig 14:41, 16 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
  • Shurg* Fair enough. I had hoped to knock the wind out of the sails of the people who claim that "this is the N Ireland(flag) template so this is the N Ireland flag", but you have a point. Incidentally, alot of UB using N Ireland sport pages use a slightly different code.
A lot of them use the {{tl:Flagicon}} but that is linked to this template, or through the {{tl:Country data:Northern Ireland}} to this template. But a lot of work is ongoing to use use new templates for the different sports so hopefully it will resolve itself soon.--padraig 14:57, 16 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

No official Flag

[edit]

As the discussion above points out, these is no official flag. The current flag should be removed from this template.Eccekevin (talk) 01:24, 12 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

Agree, I would strongly suggest that this template to be edited for that specific reason. —An Macanese 15:38, 14 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
