Template:Duplicate draft/doc
| This is a documentation subpage for Template:Duplicate draft. It may contain usage information, categories and other content that is not part of the original template page. |
| This template should never be substituted – use {{Duplicate draft}}. |
| This template may have no transclusions. This is because it is likely to disappear from any page containing it: either the draft will be promoted to mainspace with the template removed, or the draft will eventually be deleted by a bot.. |
| This template is rated as alpha. It is ready for limited use and third-party feedback. It may be used on a small number of pages, but should be monitored closely. Suggestions for new features or adjustments to input and output are welcome. |
This template may be used on a Draft or User sandbox subpage which duplicates or substantially overlaps an existing article or draft, in order to advise the author about avoiding duplicate effort.
Usage

Parameters
[edit]This template has one required parameter, and four optional parameters:
|1=– the title of a mainspace article or another draft covering the same, or related ground as the draft (required)|2=– set|2=draftto change the wording to, There is another draft that...|image=– the desired image icon (default:
twice this size)|date=– the standard date param (suggested:|date=October 2026)|talk=– location of a discussion about this topic (PageName#SectionName, or justSectionName).
Categorization
[edit]By default, this template categorizes templates into Category:Drafts that overlap or duplicate the topic of a mainspace article. However, if param |2=draft, then this categorization is suppressed.
Notes
[edit]The mediawiki software automatically adds a notice to pages in Draft space where an already existing mainspace article has the identical title as the Draft. E.g., it will tag a user's attempt to create Draft:Germany (because Germany exists and is an article).
The software does not emit the warning message when:
- the mainspace page is a redirect; e.g., it will not tag a user attempt to create Draft:Deutschland, because Deutschland is a redirect
- the mainspace page is an article, but the spelling is different, or it has a different name entirely because the existing article is broader (or narrower) than the draft, or because the title is in a different language
This template fills that gap, letting the user know about the existing article, so they don't waste their time creating something that already exists, or so that they can turn their attention from the Draft, to the existing article.
