Anecdote

[edit]

Quoting from Talk:Year_2000_problem#Year_1900_Problem_anecdote:-

From 1955 to 1958 I worked in the Hollerith dept of Kodak in the UK, in north Harrow, Greater London. Of the maybe 6000 people who worked in the Harrow factory, very few seem to have been born before 1900 - so few that the systems didn't provide for this. Very occasionally (memory says a very few times in a monthly or quarterly "run"), one of the machines, a 542 electronic multiplier, would come to a stop. Invariably it was due to someone born before 1900. With space at a high premium in 80-column punched cards, only two columns were allocated to year of birth. (if this story belongs in the Year 1900 Problem talk page, I apologise: I don't know how to start a Talk page there.) Forton (talk) 03:53, 26 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
